Which is the weakest part of my rig? ...and how bad is it?

Hi guys, I upgraded components of my PC about half year ago, but I wanted to know which part of my set up (or parts) are holding the machine back, or simply which parts would be the first to upgrade. I may am 30fps under my ideal fps for a few newer games, so that´s why it would be good to know what I have to start thinking about upgrading when the time comes. I usually play in 2k resolution. And here are my components.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti (8GB Dedicated Memory)

AMD Ryzen 7 5700G

TUF Gaming B550-PLUS Motherboard

24GB RAM, running at 2133Hz

Thanks guys, any advice or recommendations are greatly appreciated!

What memory do you have since Ryzen does benefit with higher speed memory. Looks like maybe you don't have XMP enabled which could give you a good uplift.

Yes  get 3200MHz RAM.

That card should get you max 60 fps at high/ ultra AAA titles but fo sure with 3200MHz CL14 RAM.

But in future if you want to play more demading games at 2k yoy will need lotsore then 8GB of VRAM.

Please do not take offence for my apparent confusion or rudeness,it's not intent me to be like that,it's just my BPD,be nice to me,and I'll return twice better,be rude and usually I get easly pissed of...I'll try to help anyone here,as long as it's something I dealt with, and even if you think I'm rude or not polite, forgive me,  it's not me it's my BPD.

Thanks for understanding.

That ram setup does not match the CPU. Also, who has 24gb? Do you have 3 8gb sticks? You'd probably be better off with 16gb at 3200-3600.

Here starts to show my lack of expertise xD...XMP?

What do you mean exactly when you say it doesn´t match the CPU?

  1. Its always better to have a even pairs of memory, so (2) 8gb sticks or (4) 8gb sticks. That 3rd stick probably isn't doing much to improve performance unless you have like 50 chrome tabs open at once and just need to extra capacity.
  2. 2133mhz is glacially slow, especially for a newer ryzen cpu, they perform better with faster memory. If I had to guess you'd probably see a marked increase in performance if you went from 24gb of 2133 to 16gb of 3200.

In the bios of your motherboard there will be a setting called XMP to run the ram at its rated speed, you may have 2133 ram but maybe it is faster ram and running at the motherboards default settings for it....look in the bios (google your mobo manual) and find the XMP settings, that will make your ram run at there rated speed (if they are faster than 2133?)

Also as mentioned having an odd setup of 3 x 8g will not be helping, so if your ram is able to run faster then remove the 3rd stick (middle one!), always use ram slots with a slot space between them, then they are running in dual, or buy another ram stick of the same make and speed if you can, but removing one and having them run faster will improve things.

Ok, thanks for this advice.

So turns out that was just running them at a lower speed than their maximum capability.

So, I have four sticks.

2 are 8GB which run at 3000MHz (XMP 2.0)

2 are 4GB which run at 3200Mhz (XMP 2.0)

What would you recommend for that set up to get the best possible performance?

Should I just run them at 3200 even if the two bigger ones only go to 3000?

ps, yes, I did notice a quick performance jump once I changed the speed to 3000.

I doubt the 3000 will run at 3200 you can try but? try also without the 2 4g and just run the 2 8g at 3000 see what happens, possibly the 4 sticks running at 3000 might be your best config, but make sure they are in correct slots,  i.e 2 8g in slot 1+3 and 2 4g in 2+4 or visa, etc etc..again if you are going to try the 2 8g sticks on their own, makes sure they are in dual which is always a slot empty between them

Thank you for the advice! I will give that a shot and monitor the results!

Just out of curiosity, what component would be the next part to upgrade?

For example, I'm a big player of Microsoft Flight Simulator, but despite my set up I can only really play stably at around 15 to 30 FPS on near maximum settings at 1440p.

You should be getting more than 15-30 with MSFS @ 1440, I don't play it myself but have built a few (budget) pcs for MSFS players and although the game is a beast to run you should be seeing somewhere between 30-50 on ultra I would imagine, possibly dropping to 20's in intense areas, it will benefit from having 32g of ram though, so ideally get another 2 x8g 3000mhz, also have an intensive google for the best setting not only in game but also other areas of your system to get better FPS

Yeah, that's not a Max setting 1440p machine.  Try a mix of medium and high, max/ultra is for screenshots rather than playing.

You really have a nice 1080p setup, but 1440p is going to be a stretch for a lot of AAA games.

Get your RAM running at XMP, dial back some settings that don't really matter (like shadows and post processing and some misc textures) and let us know what that does.

So I did as advised and right enough I could get around 50/60 fps even in zones like New York.

I changed the overall preset to "High-end" instead of "Ultra".

On my BIOS the XMP option wasn´t available, in its place I could only see DOCP, so I just enabled that.

I notice on a couple of games, MFS included, that I get sporadic but consistent split second frame drops. I've noticed it on MFS, RDR2 and Horizon Zero dawn to name a few. It can be very strange because the game can be running perfectly at 70/80 fps 95% of the time, but every minute or so have one of these split second frame freezes. Not sure where in the hardware that problem would be caused.
