Stuck in automatic chkdsk for 8 hours - Can I force shut down ?

Go to solution Solved by Oxamis,

Quick follow up, everything is back in order. What I did for future reference:

  1. forced shutdown
  2. started computer
  3. ignored scan
  4. went into samsung magician and ran every type of diagnostic scan, no problem detected in LBAs or SMART diagnostic but Over-Provisionning was flagged as corrupted and said it required chkdsk
  5. ran a cmd as administator
    1. typed "sfc /scannow"
    2. windows detected errors and could fix themselves
    3. typed "chkdsk"
    4. scan only lasted 30sec instead of 8hours
    5. widows saw the disk errors and suggested i typed "chkdsk /scan"
    6. windows flagged the problems it detected
    7. typed "chkdsk /f" to let windows solve these problems
    8. required a restart to solve the issues
  6. on restart again it took 30sec instead of 8hours (i think only the repair part took place here)
    1. the scan eventually froze on something like scan and repair complete 100%
    2. waited for 10 minutes and forced shutdown
  7. Computer restarted nominally without launching a scan
  8. went into cmd to test chkdsk and no errors were detected
  9. went to samsung magician and Over-Provisionning is back on tracks

my conclusion is that the lates W11 22H2 messed up with the SSD OP partionning somewhat

Hello there !

The Problem :

My computer has been stuck for 8 hours+ on "Scanning and repairing drive (C:):...". No percentage was ever showned. The wheel is still turning. Nothing changed in 8h.

The Context :

chkdsk started automatically by Windows. The computer was safely shutdown prior to this chkdsk. The last time I checked Samsung Magician (mid-september) the SSD was perfectly healthy. My PC is about 7 month old, self built.

Yesterday (9dec2022), I updated Windows 11 to 22H2 .This is my main suspect but I also updated my drivers for GPU and motherboard through Armourycrate and installed Blender 3.4 and FL Studio 21 through their websites the same day.

From what I understood chdsk seems a bit useless for SSDs but since windows flagged my disk as dirty, something must be up.

The Question :

Now, Can I force shutdown my computer (power button) without major damage done to the system or to the data while chkdsk is "running" ?

(Also, any Idea of why no percentage has ever shown, SSD thing ?)

Yes You can force Shutdown the PC by long pressing the power if that does not work just disconnect the powercord then reconnect....It should then solve itself as i have done this lots of times in the past ...For your second ques please elaborate
