3770K or 3820

I would go with the 3770k because you can overclock

The 3820 is also an unlocked CPU.

why are you guys comparing chips with $200 price difference?

Actually, it's about a $50 difference in price. The 3820 is about $350 while the 3770K is about $400.

I think you are referring to the 3930K which is about $200 more than the 3770K.

If you wan to put 3-4 cards in SLI, get the 3820

You might have a point, since the X79 platform has a wider PCI-E bus. I'm not entirely sure though.

Is it 200$ price difference in India? Here in Germany its the other way around :D
The 3820 is 20€ cheaper than the 3770k.
Its the motherboard thats kinda cost heavy.

In terms of Haswell, it will prolly serve you:
Some, maybe only Sata3 ports

Almost 90% certain that it will ship decked out with usb3 (no more usb2)

With at least 2 completely wired PCIe gen3 16x slots (maybe even 3), and that im 100% certain of.

While performance might not be that much better than the 3770k at stock.

It might be beneficial to wait and see if it overclocks better.

My personal opinion on your topic would be to wait and see.

At least do yourself a favor and wait on Linus, testing the 4770k to show you a comparison and benchmarks..
Hell even a sneak peak on those Z87 board(s) he'll get his hands on.

Yes, thats right.

However Z87 will provide you with at least 2 mechanic PCIe3 16x slots.

Here is an article (in german, sadly) that has some info on MSI's Z87 gaming grade board.

  • 3 PCIe gen3 16x Slots (all wired up, completely)
  • 3 PCIe 1x Slots
  • 6 Sata3 Ports
  • 6 USB3 Ports (on the rear I/O)

3770K does not win every time. 3820 has better physics score, and is about neck and neck in other benchmarks. Also, Rampage IV Extreme=8 DIMM slots=64GB RAM. On the other hand, 3770K motherboards max out at 4 DIMM slots.

If you needed 64gb of RAM you'd have it and you'd know why.

I'd say either go with a 3770k, or with a 3930k. Or just wait another month and see what Haswell has to offer, will be about a month until they are out.

For pure gaming, a i5 will really do just fine.

LOL The OP did post what he meant.

Which one is the best to go with, the 3770K (with Maximus V Formula?) or the 3820 (with Rampage IV Extreme?)?

Well.. I'm an ASUS fan myself, kinda..

But I would actually buy a Gigabyte Board. If its again, better suited for the task and less expensive than ASUS's solutions ;)

Edit:

I'd no broken Gigabyte board, up until now.. A fried BIOS, ya - happens all the time. "Dual BIOS" comes in handy ..

However, most ASUS Boards up to the Rampage3 kinda gave up on me, within 6 months or less ^^
