How do I choose the right cable for my display?

Joseph .M 101

I'm looking at getting a curved monitor; an LG UltraWide QHD. It's 3440x1440, has HDR10 support, and runs at the standard 60Hz refresh rate (honestly, I don't care). It has 2 HDMI inputs & 1 DP input. My GPU (GTX 1650) supports both inputs.

From what I've heard, you need at least an HDMI 2.0-compatible cable for HDR10 and such. I don't have any DisplayPort cables, and all of my HDMI cables are pretty old.

My questions basically boil down to:

- Which interface should I use to take advantage of hi-res with HDR? Are both HDMI and DisplayPort okay? Is one better/more reliable than the other?

- Is there a way for me to tell if any of my HDMI cables are HDMI 2.0-compliant?

- How do I shop for the right cable? What green/red flags should I be aware of? I'm pretty new to this specific area, so I'm not sure how to shop for a good quality cable without getting scammed/price-gouged.

NOTE: I did see that post towards the top of the "Displays" topic about compatible cables, but it was all very overwhelming for me to look at.

I would greatly appreciate any and all advice. Thank you!

Just get a regular ol dp 1.4 cable and call it a day.

Display normally even comes with one.

1. Either works

2. Plug em in see what happens

3. Honestly kinda hard to tell which cables are good and bad except for reviews.

Why not use the cables that come with the display?

Also, 1650 on a WQHD monitor? Oof.

as far as i know HDR still sucks in windows.  You're not gonna be pushing anywhere near that resolution in modern games on a 1650

With all the Trolls, Try Hards, Noobs and Weirdos around here you'd think i'd find SOMEWHERE to fit in!

try a HDMI cable you haven if all the features work.. good, all done.

if it doesnt, try something else.

on the note of what to shop for in HDMI cables: nothing. they're *ALL* shit. at least if the box makes claims of "4K" you have grounds to return it if it doesnt work. honesly just buy the cheapest one that claims to do what you want it to do.

For me Amazon Basics cables and equally low-quality cables have always kept up with what they claimed. Just buy a cheap HDMI 2.0 cable and call it a day. Or just get a DisplayPort 1.4 cable. They should both be able to fully drive this monitor.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

In my option DP is better compared to HDMI 2.0, but it is also slower at displaying when starting up the PC (which means you may never see the start up splash screen, or it will take a good few seconds before screen display anything)

There safest way is check if the cable has certification. HDMI association have a website tells you what venders are certified with them. There is also an APP to scan the certification sticker on certified products.

(Cable came from manufacture also should have a sticker. MSI's does)

This is especially true for 4k 144Hz / 8K HDMI 2.1 cables. You can buy one of these and use the same cable when you upgrade to a better monitor/gpu

Current DP 1.4 or HDMI 2.0 is enough as your monitor is only 60hz even with HDR on, or you can just use the one bundle from the box.

If your plan to purchase is 2 meter, no need look for certificate as any selling in market will do.

If your plan to purchase is more than 5 meter, then you should look for those certificate one, but still not recommended as it is way too long and high possible it can't run proper or high chances faulty easily.

Latest DP is version 2.1 (I think not selling yet) and HDMI is 2.1 as well. But it is not required for 3440x1440 at 60hz with HDR.
