Please, what's the best upgrade possible from a ryzen 5 3600x keeping the same setup?

Athreous

Guys, in your opinion, what would be the best upgrade possible in AM4, keeping the same motherboard (Asus b450m)?

Also, performance wise in games and stream/multiple tabs, which am4 will give the best noticiable boost? (1080p/2k gaming).

Is 16gb of ram good enough, or should it be upgraded to 32gb?

Would you rather recommend a full upgrade, buying everything new?

I notice a lot of hiccups moving the mouse between game and browser windows, but I can't say if this is a memory thing or lack of processing power... Is there any tool that can check that?

Check your gpu usage while gaming, if its below 99% it is a cpu bottleneck, if not then your cpu is fine for now.

And 16gb of ram should be fine for gaming and streaming.

Also make sure there isnt any background processes using up resources, stuff like discord, chrome, and whatever else you may have running will reduce your performance.

If you want to see system resources, you can always use the Performance tab in Task Manager. That'll show you if you are running low on memory or if your CPU or GPU are tapped out.

Better yet, you can take a screenshot of the Task Manager Performance tab for us when you're in a typical gaming situation with browser open so we can see what your CPU, GPU, and RAM usages look like.

Is your RAM on DOCP/XMP enabled?

500GB SSD is a bit small, is it full now? Like more than 80% filled?

3600x is weak, but shouldn't affect system operation, is the usage at 100% or close to 100% while gaming and tabbing out to browser?

Hmm xmp I think. Only windows, cyberpunk and lost ark installed right now. 99% cpu usage, gpu around 89%.

Playing in 1080p/2k i get like 15 less fps in 2k.

XMP/DOCP is the same thing, some motherboards use different names for them. Anyway, if it is enabled and your RAM is actually running at 3200mhz, then it is fine.

If the SSD is too full, it could cause slower performance, how much exactly, I'm not sure, but could be the cause.

CPU usage at 99% is likely to be the issue as well, CP2077 is very heavy, my 12400 is hammered to 80-90% at 1440p, so I'm not surprised that 3600x would be running for dear life.

If all of the above is checked, meaning that your RAM is actually running at 3200mhz and a not full SSD, and you still experience the issue while gaming.

Then I'd suggest to upgrade the CPU to at least 5600x, if you're on a really tight budget, 5600 is okay too. My suggestion would be 5700x, give you a bit more room for future games, because 5600x is slightly slower than 12400 and my 12400 is hammered by CP2077.

5700X is also an 8 core CPU, PS5 and XSX have 8 core CPUs, it's not a bad idea to have 8 core CPUs now for gaming.

If you're a baller tho, 5800X3D will be the best CPU for you.

i'm pretty much on the same boat as OP: Ryzen 5 3600X, 3060Ti, 16gb ram, XMP enabled running stable at 3600. i play at 1080p at 144htz and was wondering if upgrading to a 5600 (not X) for Black Friday would be worth it or a waste of money... mmm.... 😶
in can get a 5600 for 140 bucks.. i'm tempted...

  • 2 weeks later...

Since my mobo can still hold a 5800x3d, I'll prolly buy one, upgrade my ram to 32gb and wait till ddr5 gets cheaper, so I do a full upgrade.

Personally, I say just get the 5800X3D and be done with it if your mobo can handle it. AntOnline is still selling them on their online store and on Ebay for $330. I got mine through them on Ebay a little over a week ago, and I hear stock is starting to run low.

$330 for a CPU that beats the 7950X or 13900K in many games seems like a no-brainer to me if you have the cash for it. Just be warned that you'll need some decent cooling for this chip to get its absolute max performance.

That said, hiccups in mouse movement and stuff don't seem like a CPU issue. We figured out smooth mouse movement with CPUs that have double-digit MHz clock speeds back in the 90s, so it's likely software causing this issue, not your 3600X.

Let's relax on the beating 13900k stuff.  Or at least clarify and add the caveats.

I ain't lying and already included a known caveat (it's spicy). I didn't say all games. Right now every high end CPU wins in many games. Up to you to figure out which wins for yours. I was making the argument from a value perspective because it does trade blows with the most expensive CPUs on the market at only $330, and not exclusively in GPU-bound scenarios.

I ain't gonna clarify which games. That's Steve's job.

Since I use my pc mostly for gaming and light multitasking, like watching a stream, keeping some internet tabs open, etc, I wonder if the XD3 should be enough.

Any cpu from 2010 can do that.   Your current can easily.

Multi tasking is more having multiple heavy apps running and doing things at the same time.  Like editing a video while in a WoW raid while doing regression analysis in Excel.

Browsers, streaming, discord, etc are nothing to a cpu.
