A friend of mine is planning on making himself a new build and i have concerns about something :
He plans on buying a 4090 ( 4 slot wide gpu )
and a elgato 4k60

and a wifi card
but on most motherboards

the slots are configured so that if he puts the 4090 in the top slot he cant put both elgato and wifi pcie
is it a big loss to put it in bottom slot ( for exemple this MB : 9a3aa21f9bee4d159ab134cee40b7e2a.1600.jpg )

I could see everything fit but is there perf concerns or anything ( bottom slot is 16x pcie4  but is marked as fucntioning in x4 )
Is there any workarounds ?or bigger motherboard standards ?

Any of you familiar with 4090 clearance? Not just case clearance. ^

I don't see how it's relevant. No one should be buying 4090s. They just melt and they cost a bazillion dollars. No point.

I heared of 4090s melting, do they also melt with a high quality PSU?

The problem isn't with the PSU, it's the cable/connector.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

Exactly. And it seems to be only AIB cards, which means it is likely cut corners with a cheaper connector on the card itself.

That doesn't explain, is AIB when MSI buys Nvidia board/chip and slaps their own cooler and stuff on it?

Yes that's it

op knows how thick 4090 is, they are unsure of clearance on motherboard since most motherboards weren't built around 4slot GPU existence

Didn't see any complaint about that, mobos are normally flat there as you're supposed to slot stuff anyway..

For the melting problem i saw in this video

that it was mostly caused by side to side bending so just avoid that and everything should be  ok

He's talking about the number of PCIe "slots" the card takes up. As a 4-slot card, if he puts it in the top x16 slot it will also cover the lower x16 slot.

Welcome to the forum! There are many ways around the problem your friend has, he just has to be smarter with his component selection.

  • Buy a 4090 with a build in pump. You won't have any clearance issues whatsoever
  • Buy a motherboard with built in WiFi, so you don't need the add in card

Either one of these should provide the solution you need. You can also see if you can find an eATX motherboard with better spacing, but they're incredibly expensive for little to no real gain.

Wrong. 4090s are excellent performing cards, and $1,600 isn't a lot of money to everyone. It's definitely worth it to a decent number of enthusiasts.

It's not really that big of an issue as long as you follow the appropriate installation steps. Personally with a budget like your friend has, I'd pay the extra and get some Cablemod cables with the 90 degree GPU connection.
