Why do they not use a number that says what the heat output of a CPU is & cooler makers match that, I mean if a CPU says a number, a cooler that is at or above that should work.

Unfortunately that would go against the idea of ridiculous marketing so they won't do that.

I usually suggest Noctua's writeup on the topic to better explain why those TDP ratings are mostly bogus.

It is crazy they don't want to.

To follow this up, if you can't trust those numbers, how do you choose a cooler?

Frankly, you just ask here and get a feel for what others are using on similar systems. In time you begin to get a feel for what works and what doesn't.

well, i disagree... i wanted to look up if my cooler is good for my new cpu and all i got is this kind of stupid rant about "industry standards"... as a paying customer i deserve better, 105w yay or nay... thats all i wanna know tbh... the "information" noctua provides isnt helpful at all in this regard,  and comes off as kind of cowardly tbth

thats the underlying problem ... they arent, even intel provides temporary max tdp (iirc) and even if not its easy to find out that 125w cpu will be actually 300w with the right settings etc... and then i *still* dont know which cooler because noctua withholds that information "for reasons"... its just bad customer relationship at that point lol

I don't really know how to respond to this. I'm not sure you read the very detailed information or just didn't understand parts of it.

Yeah, this is again the problem,  i shouldn't have to read a badly written and condescending essay just because i want to know what wattage my cooler is rated at... its disturbing,  its rude, its not helpful in any way.

Basically,  *if you were noctua* you just called me an idiot. is that how you talk to all customers?  🤔

unfortunately i understood very quickly they will not whatsoever tell me the rated wattage even though its basically guaranteed they have that information.

which is likewise really stupid because had they done so i might have jumped to a bigger cooler, but now I'll just go along with 85c and likely next time will choose a manufacturer that doesn't out of ideological reasons withhold important information from me.

i agree, but there's a problem.

these days both CPU's and GPU's will vary HUGELY in power draw (and by result heat output) based on the exact situation, and how much thermal headroom it has ('turbo boost')

should we rate all CPUs' TDP based on how much power it draws with 100% system load prime95?

or should we rate all CPUs' TDP based on how much power it draws with 100% system load during a 7-zip extract?

the more we parallelize and expand on the architecture, the less valuable a 'TDP' rating actually is, because different workloads will create a vastly different heat output.

while thats not wrong , you usually know the ballpark of what to expect by a 1 minute google search... same goes for many coolers *that aren't noctua*...

here's 12700k info directly from intel for example

Quote
Performance-core Max Turbo Frequency
4.90 GHz
Efficient-core Max Turbo Frequency
3.80 GHz
Performance-core Base Frequency
3.60 GHz
Efficient-core Base Frequency
2.70 GHz
Cache
25 MB Intel® Smart Cache
Total L2 Cache
12 MB
Processor Base Power
125 W
Maximum Turbo Power
190 W

190w..................  so its safe to say a 200-250w cooler should be plenty...

amd also tells you the base tdp at at least...

Basically not saying the wattage/ heat dissipation is like if GPU manufacturers wouldn't to tell you the max power draw "because every system is different"... 🙃

Yes, why do it with 7 zip extraction. Not sure why the idiots do the ratings like they do (marketing is just a stupid reason, so that doesn't count). It would be better for marketing if you could tell just by looking at a cooler rating if it will do the job.
