PWM Fan Splitter Question

Go to solution Solved by IkeaGnome,

The reason for the 3 pin females is so that you don't have 3 fans trying to report speed to the same header on the motherboard, giving bad numbers. The missing wire and pin is the RPM speed signal.

It does not matter which one is plugged into the 4 pin female.

Yes 4 pin fans are PWM.

Yes PWM splitters will let more than one PWM fan be controlled. You can even use a set of regular 3 pin fans in a 4 pin header as long as they are ALL 3 pin and the header is in DC mode and not PWM.

Sorry if this has been answered, but...

  1. PWM cables are 4 pin, correct?
  2. PWM splitter cables allow more than one PWM fan to be controlled by one fan header on the MB, correct?
  3. I noticed that PWM splitter cables (i.e. This One) has 3 female plugs to accept 3 fans to use on one MB header. However 2 of the 3 female connections only have 3 pins. 1 of the female connection has 4 pins and the male connection looks to have 4 pins. Why the 2 3 pin female connections?
  4. Does it matter which of the 3 fans is plugged into the 4 pin female?

Sorry for the noob builder question. Thanks.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.
