Extra 4 Pin CPU Power Connector On B550 Motherboards

Hello,

I'm currently planning on building a pc using this motherboard  ASUS ROG STRIX B550-A GAMING together with a Ryzen 5 5600. I was wondering if it is necessary to populate the extra 4 pin CPU power cable in the motherboard and where to get a 4 pin CPU connector (do I just use one of the 4 pins in a 4+4 CPU connector in this case) since I haven't encountered any of these in my past builds (I usually just have an 8 pin CPU power connector).

The extra 4-pin EPS power cable is for extreme overclocking. You'll be fine without this and just need the 8-pin EPS cable.

You absolutely don’t need to connect anything to it at all. That’s like a 100w chip at most once tweaked, the 8-pin can handle over 300w.

You don't need it.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

Would it not have any issues when i put a ryzen 9 in there without the +4 pin?

The most power hungry processor on socket AM4 consumes around 160 watts if you don't overclock. Like the others said, the single 8 pin connector is good for at least 300 watts.

If your power supply has an extra 4 pin CPU connector, feel free to plug that as well, but really a Ryzen 5600 doesn't need it - it would literally work with JUST the 4 pin connector alone, so the 8 pin is more than enough.

Everyone is saying no it's not required when I have a problem, I had to have a 4 pin plugged in, I don't overclock, switched Motherboards from a Gigabyte Vision D-P to a Adus Rog Strix B550-A Gaming paired with a Ryzen 9 5900X and a RTX 3070Ti. (Motherboard needs repairs, don't ask I feel dumb) Anyways, plugged everything in, went to power it on and the GPU lit up and all the fans spun for a split second and then they stopped and nothing happened. So I dug around and found a 4+4 Splitter? Idk what it would be called it's a 8 pin that is able to split to 4 pin (Corsair RM850X) and plugged that into the 4 pin and the system finally powered on. Maybe I'm just a weird case where you need it but if you have this same problem maybe try plugging in the 4 pin and see if it boots. 🍻

Nope, you just had something else wrong and accidentally fixed it doing something else.

 

The 8 pin can handle any current gen desktop CPU at stock speeds, the 13900k is the only chip that comes close to pushing it at stock. An 8 pin can handle 300w without issue.

 

You can just leave the 4 pin or spare 8 pin empty if you don't have the connectors, of course if you do you may as well plug them in.
