4K YOUTUBE PAYWALL

just wondering what you guys think about this new paywall for 4k being tested on youtube, personally, (don't get me wrong, high res is great) I don't really think that it's going to make that much of a difference, especially when you consider the majority of people are already using 1080p or 1440p monitors anyways, and it's already pretty well known that the difference between 4k and 1080p is hard to see on a tv unless you get REALLY uncomfortably close. idk, just wondering what ya'll's thoughts are on the subject.

and also the average internet connection isn't good enough for 4k streaming anyways, plus most people on integrated graphics can't run 4k at a decent framerate

Standard stuff.  Here's most of our stuff for free, pay for something a little better.

if it helps 'sponsor' a better experience for the free users (more money from subscription = less reliance on ads) it's a great idea.

 

although.. google has a name for doing the exact opposite: more money is more money. things become premium, the stuff still available for free will get more ads to get even more revenue and to promote the paid tier.

 

either way, as long as they dont start paywalling stuff that *really* matters (like.. 720p and 1080p for example) i dont give two hoots what they do.

My thoughts: it should be based on channel following stats.

• If it's an actively watched channel with >~10^4 subs, their high-res videos can be Premium-walled
  • These are the channels that are a) generating revenue and b) generating appreciable bandwidth costs
• If it's a parent with like 10 subs (family members) archiving/sharing-to-family videos of their kids that their phone happened to take in 4K, there's no reason to Premium-wall that "content"
  • This also gives new actual content creators a minor leg up as they're starting out

4Kp60 is something like 35Mbps from Youtube. I'd argue most connections are good enough for that, especially when most content is p30/p25/p24.

4Kp60 is something like 35Mbps from Youtube. I'd argue most connections are good enough for that, especially when most content is p30/p25/p24.

 

Most recent iGPUs can HW decode 4K H.264 (at least), so it isn't that much of an issue until you get to older chips that don't have HW support.

So 99.999999999999% of the world understands...

Awwww yes just like how youtube playing in the background was normal since the original mobile release then it became a feature to pay for.

 

Jokes on them you can just download the 1080p video and use AI to upscale it for free.

I switched to 4k about 8 years ago now and youtube is basically the only thing in 4k I watch. But i'd rather watch it in 1080 than give google any money.

The Problem with that though is that the average channel starting out probably isn't going to be uploading a lot of 4k content anyways
