Do you not already have a 'scan as you shop' type system on that side of the pond?

 

Pretty much every big supermarket here in the UK already has that rolled out at most store.

 

I can't remember the last time I shopped at Sainsbury's, Tesco, or ASDA and actually used a checkout, or even the normal self service. I either use the app to scan everything, or use the handsets at the front of the store.

I suppose the only difference is you still have to go to the dedicated checkout and pay, but it still only takes a minute or so and adds an element of security theatre to deter thefts
