Initial Batches of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 series GPUs Waiting in Warehouses since August

Summary

The first batches of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40-series "Ada" graphics cards were in production since Q2-2022. NVIDIA has reportedly been stockpiling loads of its next-gen GeForce RTX 40-series RTX 4090 and the RTX 4080 GPUs across warehouses in Taiwan, China and elsewhere since August. Chinese GPU suppliers have allegedly been receiving stocks of the next-gen graphics cards for over a month now, and are likely the source of the recently leaked images.

I've been speaking with a few industry sources of mine, with one of them well-connected in Taiwan saying that NVIDIA has been stockpiling GeForce RTX 4090, GeForce RTX 4080 16GB, and GeForce RTX 4080 12GB graphics cards since August.

 

Towards the end of July 2022, I reported that Chinese GPU suppliers said they were getting their first batches of GeForce RTX 40 series graphics cards arriving in August. We've recently seen the retail packaging for the custom GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4090 GAMING OC and ZOTAC GeForce RTX 4090 AMP Extreme AIRO graphics cards.

 

I didn't get much more out of my source, but another source did seem to indicate that NVIDIA will announce the new GeForce RTX 4090, RTX 4080 16GB, and RTX 4080 12GB at GTC 2022 next week during the "GeForce Beyond" special event. The new GeForce RTX 4090, RTX 4080 16GB, and RTX 4080 12GB will start their launch in October

 

Back in July when I was reporting on the Chinese GPU suppliers saying their first batches were arriving in August, that the GeForce RTX 4090 was launching in August, and the GeForce RTX 4080 in September. But the excess stock of NVIDIA's current-gen Ampere-based GeForce RTX 30 series graphics cards in warehouses. NVIDIA probably decided against launching them sooner, as the crypto-currency crash left it with heaps of unsold high-end RTX 30-series graphics card inventory, forcing it to delay launch of the RTX 40-series, to allow time for the market to digest this inventory.

 

My thoughts

This makes sense as to why we were hearing so much mixed information originally regarding the actual launch date of Ada. I remember at first the time frame given was supposed to be sometime in the Summer. However, more recently it seems they pushed it to the Fall because of the excess Ampere inventory. Now we know for certain that the reveal will take place on September 20th, and launch should be shortly thereafter. I also find the segmented 4080 SKUs interesting, as they are supposed to have different CUDA Core configurations as well. I'm wondering if this will come to fruition; the two 4080 SKUs alongside the 4090 SKU. We will know for certain in 4 days.

At least availability shouldn't be a problem this time around, for many reasons.

I had to look this up, since I've been seeing some confusion over this before. A recent claim on videocardz is that what was previously though to be a 4070 tier card is now the 4080 12GB, with the 4080 16GB being the more serious offering. If they were based on the same GPU the memory interface would be a mess, at least this way it makes sense on a hardware level.

 

At the end of the day we need to see where the performance of any offered model stacks up against their predecessors, and whatever AMD does.

Just keeping this here as a I had to look this up, since I've been seeing some confusion over this before. A recent claim on videocardz is that what was previously though to be a 4070 tier card is now the 4080 12GB, with the 4080 16GB being the more serious offering. If they were based on the same GPU the memory interface would be a mess, at least this way it makes sense on a hardware level.

 

At the end of the day we need to see where the performance of any offered model stacks up against their predecessors, and whatever AMD does.

So there was definitely a point where TSMC was in full swing ramping up production, producing the cards chips as they were supposed to. And NVIDIA tried to scale back, but TSMC basically said not going to happen. So the 4000-series cards were sitting in warehouses, waiting to be launched.

 

As far as the 4070 12GB becoming the 4080 12GB, there seems to be various specs in the wild:

The 16GB variant of the 4080 is definitely the more serious of the two, but there's also two 4070 variants as well. It seems more recently though, the 4080 12GB would be running 21 Gbps memory while the 16GB version would be running 23 Gbps memory. 

 

I agree, the performance will determine whether or not the segmented memory and core counts are controversial or not, with pricing also being a big factor, and when compared to AMD's offerings as well.

The 12GB and 16GB "RTX 4080"-s are absolutelly different beasts. Why even call it the same series? The 12GB is rather more a 4070 Ti.

I remember the thread. Without going back to try and find it, my recollection was that nvidia at best managed to negotiate a delay in (some?) production. I asked the question if nvidia have essentially pre-paid the allocation and know they can't shift the originally planned end products, what else could they do? One option I saw was to go "fatter" on silicon than they would otherwise. My thinking is that if the chip production is a pre-determined fixed cost, either they over-product which would kill pricing, or they do keep to the forecast units but make them higher up the range than before, to soak up more of the capacity. Depending on how far forward those agreements went, they could just stockpile the excess chips until such time they would be needed, basically having more up front than a smoother distribution over the product life.

It appears they might have went the "higher up the range" route judging by recent developments. As the stockpiling of chips might have been exactly what has happened. But this should assist with availability this time around.
