Are hard drives supposed to be THIS loud or have I gotten used to SSD far to much?

I've switched to SSDs a long time ago and for the love of GOD they are a heaven send.

Can't say anything because of hearing loss, but the potential for loud sounds is there with mechanical drives just because of spindles and platters. The faster they go, the more potential exists for more sound, or louder sounds.

I remember back when my laptop had a hard drive and it was nowhere near as loud as this one. The whole damn case vibrates

The thing is about this one that it is so loud that it drives you nuts and peanuts. The whole case helps it by vibrating

External HDDs can be a nuisance - it all depends on the isolation inside the case. If it's mounted poorly, it can be quite loud. I've had to put feet on several external HDDs throughout the years to make using them bearable. My latest solution is foam feet to lift the drive off the surface, and then a folded microfibre cloth underneath; silent bliss without overheating the disk.

just a shitty mount in that case. Also most laptop drives is 5400 rpm, this is most likely 7200 rpm. Get some rubber o-rings or something.

I'll try remounting it

HDD doesn't make loud noises but sharp ones. If you can hear any coil whining type sound then you should check it out Asap!

which drive?

some models of drive are very loud, for example the WD black tends to be quite "aggressive" with the searching sounds, especially high capacity drives tend to have a whine from the amount of platters moving.

i used to have my WD black in a 1cm neoprene dampener, and it was *much* better that way than hardmounting it, but moving physical objects around quickly just makes noise.

Laptops spin at 5400 RPM, desktop drives have more platters, larger heads, and spin at 7200 RPM. From testing hard drives, they very much vary in vibration (my 3 server drives in my workstation vibrate the entire case as you said), some consumer drives I've tested can do the same thing, especially if your case has poor vibration isolation.
