Afternoon all,

Was wondering if anyone had suggestions for decent, begginer level video editing software?  Free would be preferrable but OK with a small fee.  Not doing anything all that advanced for the time being.  1st project would be to stitch together a number of timelaps vids I shot with my GoPro 7.  I've tried the software GoPro offers but can't say I like it.  Also tried MS video editor but can't seem to do anything simple like fade in/fade out with that one.

Suggestions?

OpenShot is quite easy to use imho, it's entirely free and has a decent amount of features that are not that hard to figure out how to use them...

There's a bit of a learning curve at first, but overall if you just want to do some basic video editing, it doesn't take that long to get familiar with it.

I haven't done much more than quite basic video editing, but it's a free tool and could be enough to do what you want to do.

What kinda video editing do you have in mind? How advanced do you want to go?

Filmore i found to be quite crappy and such, but its free.

Davinci resolve ive found to be mostly usable, its a lot more to learn and figure out what works well for you, id highly reccomend watching videos on it, especially tutorials and guides for newbies.

I use Davinci Resolve.

It is free for the CPU rendering version and there are lots of YouTube videos on how to use it.

Really nothing all that advanced.  First project is just to stitch together a timelapse video I took from home to Van Island.  MS video editor can do that just fine but transitions between the 6 or so vids I took is a bit jarring.

Past that I though it may be kinda fun to make a "hilite" video of sorts of our vacation.  Something similar with drone footage I have as well.  Not likely to post any of it on youtube or anything.

I just have a buch of raw footage that I think would look better with some editing to share with family.  Who knows, might turn into something I'm good at 🙂

Seems like OpenShot will be just fine for that kinda editing, and it's entirely free and fairly easy to use for some simple video editing.

  • 3 weeks later...

I took the advise of Waza69 and have tried OpenShot.

It's pretty good and basically exactly what I was looking for.  But I can see how someone could quickly outgrow it but it's been a great starting point.  After a few tutorial vids, I'm getting the hang of it.
