12700F Gear 1 3600?

Gigabyte B660M AORUS Pro AX DDR4

Kingston FURY Beast RGB 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 CL17 x2

With XMP on the only way I'm able to boot is---> turn xmp off, restart, put it in gear 1, restart, enable xmp

It will boot but I cannot install windows. It always gives errors when copying files.

Set to gear 2 + XMP and everything is fine.

I didn't know about the non k problems with gear 1 when I purchased everything. Would it be better run a bit slower with gear 1? Or at 3600 CL17 Gear 2?

I've seen a few people recommend 3466 15-16-16-35...

Cheers 🙂

PS .. ELI5 please lol

Yes. Gear 2 doesn't start having any advantages over Gear 1 until you get to 4400MHz+, and even then for a lot of use cases it's really not a good idea.

You've got a kit of Samsung B die (3600MHz CL17-18-18 is a B die bin), 3466MHz CL14-14-14-28 should be very achievable at ~1.45V and should give better performance than XMP anyway.

Thanks. I will try that 🙂

Check thaiphoon burner for ic, it can be an old bdie kit as this was a bdie bin a long while ago or its just normal 3600 cl18 but cas has been set to 17

Bdie is stressful on the imc which doesnt help but it times tight, i think you may wanna loosen trcd as i think trcd is a very stressful timing on the imc and cas just leave it at 14 or 15 depending on the volt ∆ between them as trfc + sr dr dd subtimings > cas, no point running overly loose either as its like cpu clockspeed where at a certain freq it needs tons of volt but lower freq doesnt need much, stay in the middle of those 2 for efficiency peak

lower volt is preffered just because extra temp headroom but some ics like bdie dont degrade from volt

I tried that .. changed nothing else (optimized defaults). No boot 😞

Edit: I set optimized default settings. Then set gear 1, set xmp (3600 17 21 21 39), set speed to 3400.. It just made it through a pass in memtest. Is this likely the best i can do with 4x8GB DIMMs?
