Alternative to 3070?

I'm looking into building my first pc. I currently intend to get a Nvidia RTX 3070, but lately it's been somewhat difficult to find one for a decent price. I plan to be primarily vr gaming (i.e. connecting a headset to the pc) - are there any other graphics cards with similar performance that aren't as highly priced?

3060 ti is very close in performance to the 3070 for less money.

 

AMD RX 6700 XT/6750 XT and RX 6800 are very closely matched to the 3070 (better in the case of the 6800 depending on game) but just aren't as good at ray tracing, which doesn't seem like a concern for you.

Why spend $500-$700 on an RTX 3070 when you can get a 6700XT for $380?

 

30-series cards are still a lousy value in this crashed market.

You can get used RTX 2080/2080 SUPERs for around 300-350 USD in very decent shape. Additionally, last I checked the RX6700 is a decent counter to the 3070 if you're having issues finding that card

The 3070 is tested faster than the 6700XT by HU, resulting in a good margin.  11% at 1080p, 13% at 1440p, and 19% at 4k     It's just one reviewer and some caveats (like RTX on) but worth looking at.

 

I would pit the 6800 or 6800XT against it, not the 6700XT.

So a less than 15% performance gap at the resolutions one is actually likely to use cards like these for, with a 20-25% price gap

Yep.  As you know it's incredibly rare to find a performance gap that is greater than the price gap.  So a 20-25% price upcharge for 11-19% is actually par for the course

So what I'm seeing is either get older Nvidia cards or go for AMD. Thanks for the help!

That's what I'm saying. Is a 3070 faster, yeah usually. But it's also $150-$200 more expensive for 10-15% performance difference.

3070 at anything but $450 or below is just a bad value in August of 2022 I think. I think it's a hard sell at $500, and only an idiot would pay $700 for one.
