Advice for building a NAS/Main PC backup

Hi, 

I am planning on building a secondary PC as a NAS to backup my current PC to. I may also use it as a media server in the future. Here are the planned specs.

-i5 3550S

-Gigabyte GA-H61M-D2-B3

-2 x 4GB DDR3

-Corsair RM650X

-6TB Toshiba P300 (mass storage)

-120GB Patriot Burst Elite (boot drive)

-Fractal design Meshify C

-Intel stock cooler 

I also have a few case fans lying around which I may use.

Most of these parts (CPU, RAM, PSU, Case) I already have lying around. All parts except for the storage are used. I may add another 6TB drive in the future when I have more budget, so that I can set up a RAID1 array. I have not yet decided what operating system to use, I will probably just start out with Windows, and then when I want to use it for a media server I might run Plex in a VM or something like that. Can you guys see any major issues with my plan? Do you have any advice or recommendations?

Given that you already have the parts, just build it. For the OS, consider Proxmox or TrueNAS Core over Win-OS. It'll save you headaches, ask Linus (and Jake!  )

You can’t really set up RAID after the fact, unless you go with unraid. 
 

I would potentially give unraid a hard look for your use case. Truenas likely is it what you want to use - this is coming from a rather dedicated truenas user myself.
