depending on where you are, I'd say the R9 290X or the R9 290 are probably the best choice. Here in germany a 290X is half as much as a Titan and performs pretty much the same. A 290 is just slightly less and you'll be able to save even more money over a titan. You could crossfire R9 290s and you'd still be well under the price of a titan.

wow... thanks. this is really a very active forum :-) I have forgotten to mention: i will watercool the card... so maybe the 290x is the better option. But i have read that a lot of r9-cards have coil whining. Both modells are from gigabyte.

I have the chance to buy a gtx titan (used) for 450$ or a 290x (used - reference-design) for 370$. Which one would you choose?

Of course that's all determined by algorithms, but I would say the TITAN, which has much more memory (for high resolutions), and things such as faster fill rate, and higher benchmark scores.

I like the color scheme of Noctua fans. Deal with it. Forget about the bad memories of the past.

Definitely get the Titan unless you're planning on watercooling. If you're only paying $80 more, the Titan is the better choice and reference 290X's are just going to run hot and loud.

Depends if you care about the 290x running at 95 degrees and loud as hell. The 290x runs a tad faster in some games, but they generally trade blows. The Titan comes with extra features with shadowplay and all of the Nvidia stuff, but the 290x has mantle and all of that stuff. They perform the same, and 4GB is enough for even 4k so it boils down to whether or not you are willing to pay $80 bucks to have it run cooler and quieter along with Nvidias features.
