Raid + Optane memory + Linus' petabyte server = what?

They do, that is a relatively normal thing to do with ZFS for example. ZFS uses RAM as a "cache" called arc, and you can use SSD's, or preferably optane as a second layer of cache called L2 arc.

Like any cache, Optane only makes access faster for data that is in the cache. If you can afford a cache that is as large as your entire HDD, you can simply remove the HDD from the equation.

 

In any case, combining both should get you the read/write speed of the cache, for any data that fits in it and the RAID speed for anything else.

Yes and no.
