I am building my first pc and it will have 12th gen (wasn’t the task scheduler optimized for 12th gen) and I was wondering if I should buy a windows 11 key or buy a 10 and then do the free upgrade thing, I’ve used win 10 before but never 11 and do you even need to be on windows 11 or are they still giving 10 security updates and stuff like that. (Sorry for rambling, I know just enough to know that I don’t know anything)

W10 will be supported until at least 2025, so it's really whichever one you want to go with. I am currently running 10 on my work laptop, 11 on my personal rig, and MacOS on my M1 Air. I haven't noticed anything too weird with W11 yet, but I am sure that there are still a good amount of programs that don't really play nice, since 10 is still so prevalent.

Yes

If this is a gaming focused PC, Hardware Unboxed did a benchmark test with windows 10 vs 11 in games, there wasn't any advantage to 11's improved scheduler in that area. If it were me I'd stick with 10

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

PSU tier list

How many watts do I need?

PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

Windows 10 is still getting updates as of now.

I recommend getting Windows 10 for now, and upgrade to Windows 11 at a later date. I had upgraded to Windows 11 (fresh install) and some of my programs / apps that I use for work are buggy.

Although if your just gaming, I can recommend Windows 11. So far, I did not have any issues with my games in Windows 11.

FYI:

  • My games are: GTAV, World War Z, L4D2, Forza Horizon 4
  • My current setup is a Windows 10 PC for work, and a Windows 11 PC for gaming.

Windows 11 is recommended for Intel 12th gen CPU because of the scheduler support for E and P cores.

In terms of general computing, regardless of the CPU model, the improvements to the scheduler deliver a snappier experience overall as you use the system.

In terms of polish, it is fine. Reliability and stability are a match to Win10, which is expected as it is based off that OS.

As for UI/UX polish, at the moment, it is lacking. The coming up version in October/November brings a substantial set of improvements. A lot of minor things, but it all adds up.

Compared to Windows 10, though, it is a massive improvement. Windows 10 is more of a museum of UI's, which I guess you can say is... that it is part of its charm. In the other hand, Windows 11 actually brings a lot of consistency. Sadly, because of this, it really makes things that aren't updated yet highlight themselves like a sore thumb. Again, much better with the coming update, but it isn't out today (unless you join the Insider Program).

In terms of new features, Windows 11 brings a lot to the table. The question is if you care or not. That decision is yours.
