Budget (including currency): 2500-3500$ CAD (preferably around 3000$ CAD but can go a bit higher or lower)

Country: Canada

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for:

  • New FPS games such as Call of Duty or just generally new games that I've missed out on such as Forza Horizon 5.
  • The Source Hammer 2 Engine. (Mapping editor for Source 2 games)
  • Some light video editing through Sony Vegas.
  • General browser duties and workloads for school.

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

  • There is no upgrade path for my 2010 prebuilt so I'm going to build it from scratch.
  • I am going to buy within the next 2 months, currently getting the budget now and am wondering if I should buy the parts all at once or whenever I get the money for a part I'll buy it, unsure.
  • Looking to get a new monitor and upgrade from my 1080p 60hz one to a new 1440p 120hz+ (was looking for 4K ones but those are pretty expensive for high refresh rates lol)
  • If there is extra money in the budget I'm probably going to look for a new mouse/keyboard and mousepad (or headphones)
  • If I get another monitor I will be using the 1080p monitor and a 1440p one.

General Information:
OS: Planning on dual booting Linux and Windows (already own a digital copy), which might influence my choice of GPU or CPU.

GPU:
I've also heard a AMD GPU is more intergraded and preferable on Linux however I've also heard good things about Nvida's software and combability with some productivity tools (in game development specifically) so I'm not sure which to pick. I was thinking about getting either a 3080 or a 6900 XT.

CPU: I have no preference but have heard that an AMD CPUs have a better performance was thinking about a 5900x but am unsure.

Storage: Was thinking of getting a good NVME SSD, the top line ones like the Samsung 970 are pretty fast but also expensive, I'm planning on having 2 m.2 drives for each OS with each being at least 1TB and maybe a 2TB HDD for games or other stuff. Generally I probably wont notice if my SSD isn't top notch after using an old 2.5 SSD for a few years.

RAM: Was thinking about either 32gb or 64gb for my total RAM, 32gb would be great for compiling 8K textures however I do not suspect I will need 64gb in reality, if required I can upgrade later.

Case/PSU: No preference, I was mainly looking for cases that are quiet and have good airflow, I've heard good things about the Meshify 2 though I'm unfamiliar with other possible case options.

Cooler: Since I'm a first time builder I've got no clue how to set up an AIO or custom water cooling, I could probably learn but I might risk some internal components and a lot of maintenance would be inconvenient. I know someone that uses an Artic 34 Duo and has said good things but I am unsure if it'd be enough for my rig.

Forgot to mention this but I was wondering if it was worth to wait for new CPU's to launch or GPU launches to buy those but I've heard to buy before the new launch.
Also, do cases come with case fans or do I need to buy them separately? I've seen people buying case fans but I'm not sure if that's because they want RGB or because the case doesn't come with them.

AMD for CPU and GPU will likely work smoother in Linux.  You mention Sony Vegas, so there is less of a need for going with NVIDIA.  Radeon cards are also generally cheaper right now.

32 GB of good speedy RAM (good in that it works well with a Ryzen chip)

The 5900X will need more than a budget CPU cooler, especially if you are going with an Air Cooler over an AIO (I personally am more comfortable with Air cooling over any kind of liquid cooling)

If you are going with Ryzen 5000 - that will mean you should go for PCIe Gen 4 SSD drives where possible, and maybe choose a board which includes M.2 heatsinks, to ensure they don't get too toasty.  I'm sure others will make up a parts list with all this in mind.

CPU: Ryzen 7 1700  |  Motherboard: Asus Strix X370-F  |  RAM: Corsair Vengance LPX 32GB
Case: Phanteks Enthoo Luxe White  |  Cooler: Cryorig R1 Universal
Storage: Samsung 970 Evo SSD M.2  -- Samsung 850 Evo 500GB SSD SATA  --  2x WD Caviar Green 2TB HDD  -- Seagate 4TB HDD SATA -- Seagate 3TB HDD SATA

Display: Dell U2713HM -- Viewsonic - VX2257  |  PSU: Corsair RMi Series RM850i

What speed RAM would be good, I am guessing that 3600 would be enough?

Would a NH-15 or a Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 be enough for a 5900x?
Thanks for the help!

D15 is prime air cooling

The NH-D15 from Noctua is top tier, but can be pricey.  I had planned to grab a chromax black version (with the white cover) for my up coming build, but I saw it's performance was matched by the more affordable DeepCool AK620, and aesthetically, I think it looks much nicer, and no need for accessories,

12700F is likely cheaper and better, about the same performance in MT tasks, but slightly better gaming performance and significantly better ST performance.

I would start with something like this and make changes as needed:

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: Intel Core i7-12700F 2.1 GHz 12-Core Processor  ($404.95 @ shopRBC)
CPU Cooler: Deepcool AK620 68.99 CFM CPU Cooler  ($70.06 @ Vuugo)
Motherboard: MSI PRO B660-A DDR4 ATX LGA1700 Motherboard  ($167.98 @ Newegg Canada)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory  ($124.99 @ Newegg Canada)
Storage: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive  ($129.99 @ Amazon Canada)
Storage: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive  ($129.99 @ Amazon Canada)
Video Card: ASRock Radeon RX 6800 XT 16 GB Phantom Gaming D OC Video Card  ($899.99 @ Newegg Canada)
Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow ATX Mid Tower Case  ($129.27 @ Vuugo)
Power Supply: Corsair RMx (2021) 850 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply  ($154.98 @ Best Buy Canada)
Total: $2212.20

Maybe a better CPU or motherboard, or more and/or faster storage, the build is quite a bit below the budget, so you can change it without really hitting your budget limits.

I choose the 6800XT because I don't think the performance difference to the 6900XT is big enough to make the price difference worth it, but the budget allows it if you want to get it, but in my opinion you're better saving that money to upgrade the GPU later considering the small performance difference between them.

For high performance GPUs, AMD is indeed usually the better option on Linux compared to Nvidia, but for iGPUs and CPUs it doesn't really matter, both Intel and AMD usually work as expected on Linux.
