I think similar thought processes go into making something like wintergatan's marble machine.

 

 

Once you have a the basics of various pitches and tonalities nailed down--plugging in sheet music is straightforward.  In my mind, it doesn't take much of a cognitive leap to go from a MIDI recording; to thinking that you could get some similar notes out of a 56k modem; to exploring what other kind of electronic notes you can generate with a dot-matrix printer--and then you're off to the races.

 

p.s.

If you've ever watched an old-school calliope or heard any "automated band" device from the 1800's--this isn't that far removed.  The Children's Museum in Indianapolis used to have one providing music for their carousel.  They run off punch cards/paper/discs/drums, and all of the various drums, cymbols, etc--all work the same way.

Thats wicked insane!  See i have a mechanical engineering background and the mechanics of that are super impressive.
