Fibre channel vs Ethernet, Will this work?

I have some I think SFP+ 10/25Gbe cards pulled from a server and while looking different things up I noticed some times they are called fibre channel cards, after continuing down the rabbit hole I'm just confused as to if my plan for them will work.

The cards I have a QLogic MSIP-REM-QLG-AH2010410

My plan is to run a cable from a pfSense box containing one of these cards to a switch like this one and connect multiple devices over normal rj45 ethernet.

Am I missing something or is this a fine configuration?

(assuming pfSense supports these cards at all, I still need to confirm that).

So fibre channel isn't ethernet or uses IP packets. It is completely different than Ethernet and IP system. There are different fibre channel switches and devices.

 

Get a 10gbe sfp+ card, you need ethernet to connect to that switch.

Ok, I looked it up and it seems like these cards actually are Ethernet rather than fibre channel. It's a QLogic FastLinQ QL41254HLCU.

Give it a try pfsense can be picky about network cards as many products don't get a drive for freebsd.

finally got it working.

 

for anyone else who happens to stumble upon thing somehow you need to add:

if_qlnxe_load="YES"

to /boot/loader.conf (use 'ee /boot/loader.conf') and reboot.

you also need pfSense 2.6.0 or above.

(and they don't show up on the console, only the web GUI!) 
_{I may have wasted too much time thinking it wasn't working and trying different things before thinking maybe I should check the web thing...}
