We have two machines both using windows 10 and they both have a 2.5 drive dock built in. When we make a new folder in the swapable drive and save files to it , then move the drive to the other pc , it will not allow access to the files in the folder we just created. Says "don't have permission" but you can click continue and it opens the folder but the folder is empty.

The drive however has a bunch of pre existing folders that are 100% accessible. Not entirely sure how these are all fine but seems like new folders are just not working the way the existing folders are.

Do you have any permissions set up on the drives and/or directories? Sounds like it's not inheriting the permissions when new objects are created.

Also, does the permission error only happen from one computer to another, or both ways? For instance, moving it from PC#1 > PC#2 has an error, but #2 > #1 does not.

to my knowledge , I myself did not specifically tell the machine any sort of permissions. so whatever windows would have as default would be what it's using

(i'm remotely helping someone with this issue so the machine aren;t in front of me)

I did just now ask them to try it backwards , and now folders and files are seemingly (randomly) not showing up or showing less files or smaller folder sizes indicating it either can't see or isn't copying files to the drive.

I'm guessing I don't have the drive set up correctly to be able to be swapped between machines , not sure what i'd have to set though

I made some progress,i was able to access the files by running WinRAR as TrustedInstaller and using it to navigate to the files and launch them.

I used ExecTI to do that: https://winaero.com/download-execti-run-as-trustedinstaller/

Maybe that will help you access the files.

i figured it out. we had to reboot the computers between drive swaps so the machine knew that at some point the drives were removed. otherwise the machines never knew the file configuration changed and thus tons of errors.
