Day One Tuning Advice

intheinaka

Apologies if this isn't quite the right section of the forum.

I've got my first custom build arriving on Monday, and I was hoping for some advice on what I should do on day one to have it running as smoothly as possible.

I know that I should go into the BIOS to enable the XMP profile on my RAM, but that's about all I've gleaned so far.

My specs if it helps:

CPU: i5-12600KF

Mobo: ASUS TUF Gaming B660M-PlLUS Wifi

GPU: RX 6600

RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 32GB (2x16)

SSD: 500GB Samsung 980 Pro

Cooler: Frostflow 240 Liquid Cooler

PSU: Corsair 650W

Case: Lian Li Lancool 215

Thanks!

For all i know enable xmp and you are good to go, cpu overclock is dead and ram oc is usually not really worth the effort since its more for fun but you may be interested in gpu oc since its just crank up sliders with a benchmark/stress test in the background, itll also give the most noticable benifit fps wise

BIOS:
1. adjust fan curves + enable XMP
2. turn on above 4G decoding + smart access memory

3. turn on secure boot (use factory default keys) if you're installing windows 11 and do not plan to dualboot

Windows:

1. drivers from motherboard manufacturer's page (wifi, chipset, etc.)

2. drivers for GPU from AMD

3. (optional) partition your drives as needed

later on you can mess about with overclocking

If you found my answer to your post helpful, be sure to react or mark it as solution 😄

After I do the things mentioned above:

I use HWiNFO64 to check to see if the cooling solution is working properly.

I then run benches and take screen shots.  I check on line to see if is underperforming well. I usually do this with Time Spy and Cinebench.

The screen shot are used to spot changes in the system later on or post here to help others.

Don't mess around with it too much.

If you have to ask what to do, changes are that you might cause more hark than good by trying to "optimize" your PC.

Personally, I like to keep things as clean and simple as possible. Only install the necessary drivers and programs. Remove any bloatware that the PC might come with (maybe even do a clean install). That's about it. Enjoy your new PC.
