GTX 680 vs GTX 770

Hi all, I'm currently in the market for a mid-high tier value GPU to tide my system over till Star Citizen releases in 2015. The current GTX 560ti just won't cut it for the upcoming modules.

I was considering between the 760 and 770. The 770 can be had for about the same price as some custom 760s while performing a lot better.

However, with some lucky research, I found out the 770 is essentially a rebadged 680 with higher speeds and no actual hardware differences.

If the above is true, wouldn't it be better to just get a 680, overclock it myself and get the same end product? Am I missing something here?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

No because as you said, the 770 is basically a better 680. So if you just overclock it to match a 770, then you could just buy a 770 OC it to make it faster etc. I say 770.

Someone told Luke and Linus at CES 2017 to "Unban the legend known as Jerakl" and that's about all I've got going for me. (It didn't work)

Yes but you'd have to pretty heavily oc the 680 to match the 770.

Aren't they exactly the same?

The 770 is ~8% faster than the 680 according to testing from Anandtech http://anandtech.com/show/6994/nvidia-geforce-gtx-770-review

But isn't it still essentially a factory oc'ed 680?

How heavy is that oc? Most speeds seem to be bumped up by 50 - 100 Mhz or so. I've never oc'ed before so it would be helpful to get some perspective.

It has:

1GHz faster mem clock

Slightly higher boost and core clock

Other than that I didn't see a difference.

Pretty much.

You could also just flash the bios http://www.overclock.net/t/1396335/turn-your-gtx-680-in-to-a-stock-gtx-770

IIRC standard clock is somewhere around 1100 for 770, most 680's come in at low 1100's to 1000. this puppy peaks out at around ~1340, I could take it higher by raising the voltage lock on it.

Mem is also 1Ghz faster out of factory, though I've raised mine an additional, so 2Ghz over a 680 stock.

The 770 is a wee bit better than a 680. If they're similarly priced, 770.

Error: 410

Thanks for all your kind answers guys.  :)

Here in Singapore the 770s cost $80 to $100 more than a $400++ 680. In that case I will probably be getting a 680 since an 8% increase in performance does not seem to be worth a 20% - 25% increase in price.

(Awesome forums, thanks for helping a new guy like me out!)
