What OS/Sofware should I use for my home server/NAS?

NorAmI

Hi all,

I want to make a home server with "old" pc parts that I have.

I would like it to be a NAS (local storage)

and be able to run docker containers for things such as nextcloud, a gitlab runner and some other stuff.

and if possible a graphic ubuntu, to be used as second pc for simple excel work and googling stuff.

As for specs it is my old pc components.

Z170 MB with a i7 6700k 16Gs of 3000Mhz RAM

256G nvme SSD and a seagate 2 TB HDD

For the NAS part I plan to buy some other HDDs

So my question here is, what OS / Software combination do I need  to achieve that result ?

I would look into running proxmox as your hypervisor, and then you can virtualize whatever you want under it.

I run proxmox with truenas, multiple Ubuntu VM’s (one of which hosts docker containers), home assistant, and windows all running. Lots of YouTube videos showing and explaining how this works.

I don't want the VM overhead so just have an Ubuntu install and everything as dockers or snaps, and samba running directly on the host.
