Upgrade from 3060

Hello all!
Back in December and splurged on an RTX 3060. I definitely paid too much, but who can even see the future, right? I'm running a 3440x1440p monitor, and like to play VR on a Quest 2. Overall the performance is pretty good with the 3060, but I want something with a little more power. Now that prices have been coming down, I have considered picking up a 6700xt or 3070. However, I know that RTX 4000's series is also supposedly around the corner. My primary concern with the launch of the 4000 series is that it'll be out of stock immediately and for a few months, especially with ongoing chip shortages. However, I do already have a 3060, which is still a pretty good card and I could probably weather the storm with. If you guys were in my position, what would you do? Just trying to fully think it through.

Thanks!

Definitely sounds like you're in the mood to buy, not sure we can talk you off the ledge.

First: Define your problems: What are you dissatisfied with in your current setup? Pick something specific and quantifiable thenSay it/Type it out (does it sound silly?)

Second: Define your Goal and what is needed to achieve that. Will a new GPU do that, Which card specifically will do that, AND how much money will it cost(decide now and stick to it).
Third: after doing the above items, do you have the financial resources to splurge this amount easily while maintaining a healthy (3-6 month) reserve financial savings(at least here in the US the crap is definitely heading for the fan).

You realize you paid to much back in December and desperation leads to higher prices, so be careful.

If all these things line up and you're ok with it, stick to the plan and execute.

Thanks for the reply. While I am in the mood to get a better GPU, I have been since December, but never thought prices would drop so soon.

My main issues are regarding some of the newer and more demanding games, such as Forza Horizon 5, Cyberpunk 2077, RDR2, stuff like that. Running medium settings (which I have no problems with doing) I get FPS of around 60-80fps. While good, I generally prefer 100+, that's not a massive deal though, I only notice it on a few titles (though I'm sure it'll be true on more upcoming titles)

My biggest issue is with running VR. The Quest 2 has some higher res screens than previous devices, which is great, but in some experiences in VR I am between noticeable scaling issues and subpar framerate. With VR, I find that I notice unwanted and unsatisfying resolution unless I run at least a little bit of super sampling. At the same time, if I get below 90fps I get motion sick quicker.

Still, both of these can wait, and aren't needed to be immediately addressed.

A card that would solve both of these problems would be the RTX 3070, which can be found now for $600. I would want to spend max of $600-$650 both if I bought now, and if I waited.

I do have plenty of money saved, I'm actually a college student living at home so many of my living expenses are (generously) paid by my parents, such as some food, rent, utilities, etc. I worked extra this past month to build a savings pool of $650.

I'm perfectly fine with waiting, especially since I have a 3060 right now, but I do have concerns that we will see more stock issues and possibly higher GPU prices, and I simply wanted to hear what others thoughts are for this situation. Obviously nobody here has a crystal ball, but I just wanted to hear some other perspectives.

if you are gonna jump from a 3060 to 3070, just wait, there will likely be huge inventories of gpus early next year, i think people are still underestimating how bad gpu sales are right now based on price action. There's no rush.

well i just upgraded my rift S to a quest 2 and my 1080ti to a 3080ti i play high demanding stuff like sim racing with supersampling and stuff and the 3080ti is an absolute beast but the upgrade from a 3060 to a 3070 isnt worth it if you cant at least swing for a 3080 i'd wait.

Could you elaborate more on what you mean here? Prices are going down, as are sales, no?

i think they are making way more cards than they are able to sell, especially the 3000 series (8nm samsung just sucks)

i've seen 3060ti for as low as 440usd and 6700xt for 480usd, and they were in stock for days. Anything at or above msrp from this point on should be considered a bad deal imho.

I still expect next gen to sell like hotcakes though.

That's my concern with next gen, that it will sell like crazy and be nearly impossible to get for a while. Then again, I'm not sure how much that will matter, I could always hang onto the 3060 till a 4070 becomes available.

Yeah but frankly that's what would make something actually worth upgrading to.  Going from a3060 to a 3070 when you already have a 3060 isn't a worthwhile upgrade.  Just enjoy the 3060, stop looking at new GPUs, and the nervosia will go away.  When something way faster comes out in a few years go buy that.  Imagine if it was 2018 and the 1080ti (same speed as your 3060) was the fastest GPU you could get.  You'd think you were king and had reached the pinnacle of gaming performance.

I edit the shit out of my posts.  Refresh before you respond.

Very true. I do think I will likely go for the 4070, given it is a decent leap in performance over the 3070.
