It's less than ideal, but it's a solution you can implement for free with the equipment you already have. Just remember to give static addresses to all the ports you plan on using.

Either that or you'll need a managed switch. (If you go this route, get one with SFP+ ports so you can do 10 gigabit in the future.)
That's also what I did before upgrading to 10Gbit. Β

I actually went in stages, first to a the spare Gigabit port on my motherboard (its a PC rather than an off-the-shelf NAS so had two ports already) then to a 1Gbit switch with two 10Gbit ports, DAC from the switch into my NAS and the main machine I would be moving files from in the copper port.
Β
I then moved to a multi-gig switch before eventually moving up a tier to one with more faster ports (they're all in my sig)Β as I knew I would be getting Gigabit FTTP (hopefully later this year) which would add yet more contention, plus I wanted more than one client to be able to copy to the server and didn't want the mess of another network, another switch or multi-port NIC and a ton of extra cables.
Moving to 2.5Gbit is probably a decent compromise, but I wanted to go all the way as some of my storage is SATA SSDs.
I actually have LACP on my router so that once I get FTTP I can concurrently use the 5G backup though will likely replace that with a 2.5Gbit capable model.
