Windows 11 Antimalware Service Executable very high CPU usage.

So I seem to have an issue with this service taking up 20-50% CPU usage whenever I start doing something on my PC. I have an i3-1005G1. Is there anything that can be done or is this just how windows is now?

that cpu is both considerably slow and stock windows installs are considerably wasteful as well. so both

Yeah I know its pretty slow, it was just surprising because on Windows 11 the CPU is pinned at 100% a lot, where as I tried out a Linux distro and it barely ever pushes past 60-70 unless I'm like compiling something. And on Windows what I usually see eating up CPU cycles is the antimalware service for windows defender. I just don't understand why and how windows 11 is really that inefficient.

What do you do? Is there a guide I can reference to modify windows to run better?

i just did this back when it was a thing and never looked back

Awesome thanks, I'll watch it and test it out, see how it compares to my performance with Linux. I switch over to Manjaro for the time being and got almost a 2x performance bump.

I actually have a Dell XPS 13 with a 1065g7 in it and win 11 made it...well not unusable, but much slower. It also reduces battery life and it basically runs hot all the time. Now, you could think I am imagining things, but after reinstalling win10 everything just runs better. I can't tell you why, but even on a clean install of Win11 (I tried a few times with fresh installs), my laptop just would not play nice with it, despite Dell's official certification for the device. Things like Word would fry my lap...

I have a slower CPU, a Core i7 930 6GB of RAM system. I don't have this issue.

I think Defender wants to do a full scan and some mix up is causing it to occur when you are doing things.

Do a full system scan with Windows Defender. (make sure it doesn't go to sleep while doing so).

Then do Start > type: Maintenance > open: Security & Maintenance

A panel will open. Expand "Maintenance" section, and pick "Start maintaining" blue link.

Let it do it's thing. Will take a while.

Once done, click on "Change maintenance Settings" blue link, and you set a time when your system can perform this task.

2AM is the default, but your system must be turned on. Depending on the system and configuration of the system, it might not be able to wake up the sleep, if it is sleeping/hibernating, to perform the task, and does it when you are using the system. So adjust it to a time that better fits your needs.

If your issue is not resolved, you can try adjusting the task scheduling of Windows Defender:

  • Open Task Scheduler, then under 'Task Scheduler Library' on the left side column, go to: Microsoft > Windows > Windows Defender, and double click on "Windows Defender Scheduled Scan"

  • Then set these options (feel free to adjust the values to what seems best for you. Keep in mind that if your system is at sleep and Windows Defender can't do it's scan, you'll be back to where you are now, as it would really want to scan your system):

See I've done this and the only thing that seems to help is disabling real time protection which kind of defeats the point, also it happens with a clean install of windows 11 as well.
