I'm looking to get some displays to use for the next year; I'll be staying where I am instead of moving (aside from a practicum), and I don't feel like buying an ultrawide just to sell it again in a few months.

I have three current options:

  • 2 24" 1080p monitors; one 60hz, one 144hz
  • 27" 1440p monitor
  • 32" 1440p monitor

What are your guys thoughts? Which setup would you be going for?
I'm leaning a little more towards the 32" personally, but part of me does want 2 again.

They're all the same price.

What do you guys think? Any pros and cons that you've experienced with similar setups?

27 inch 1440p is the sweet spot. 32 inches is too big. I don't super duper like gaming on just one 24 inch screen so that's not a good option either

Yeah my dad has a 32" and it's pretty monstrous. However, out of the monitors I'm looking at the 32" gets the best rating on RTings.

32 inch is probably big, unless you sit far away from it. I have a 32 inch tv and it's gigantic and I wouldn't want to use it as a monitor due to size (and the fact that it's a tv, but that's not the point here).

I use a 24 inch 1080p monitor and it's great, but then again I've never used 27 inch or anything above 1080p so I can't say how different it would be and if it's worth getting 1 monitor instead of 2.

I would say get the 27, and maybe add like a cheap used $20 monitor for a second monitor if you want one, for a second monitor pretty much anything would do I assume

Are you planning to do productivity-type work, or streaming? If so, the best option is two monitors, hands down. Being able to put things on two screens has saved my sanity while teleworking, and I just bought a portable monitor for my travel-heavy job.

If not streaming or doing productivity work, then I would go with the 27 inch monitor. I have a 27-inch (1440p) as my main monitor, and my old 24-inch (1080p) as my second monitor for when I'm working.

They'll be new, but not from a shop. That's a nice one, but they're $415 after tax here, the other monitors are all $115 cheaper.

Dell S3220DGF, Asus VG27AQ and Asus VG27AQL1A are currently the front runners. The VA based Samsung G5 is also an option, but it's only $25 less and doesn't seem nearly as good.

The Dell has Freesync Premium Pro, the L1a has Premium, and I couldn't find anything on the AQ. If it doesn't have Freesync, it's out of the running.

I don't find it toooo ungodly.

I can't stand having monitors of different sizes, so a cheap side monitor wouldn't really be an option sadly.

I can't stand having two monitors that are different sizes, so that's a no go. Plus the desk space required for a 27" + a 24" would be a touch too much currently. I know, struggles.

Kind of productivity work, it's personal projects that require a lot of emailing and tons of tabs. It's not hard to do on a single monitor, and this wouldn't be long term I only plan on having the setup for maybe a year at most, of which 4 or 5 months will be spent elsewhere.

I almost bought a portable monitor for my laptop actually. I resisted though. I have enough toys that I use very infrequently 😂

@dizmo

I got on the 32" bandwagon 3+ years ago and never looked back. I just can't use anything smaller as a main driver since then.

Resolution is not that important 32" QHD can be fine, if the panel is otherwise decent. 4K is not that compelling or even worth the price on 32".

In fact, I think I could go a bit larger than that and it'd be better for multitasking. Maybe 37-40" would also be fine with a standard aspect ratio, nothing weird.

My main 32" monitor got fried a few months ago and I had to use a 49" 4K Sony TV as a main monitor for a few weeks until I got a new monitor. 49 inch is too big for that.

But under and including 40" I think it's humanly usable.

I tried using 24" or 27 as main monitors and it just feels very small and limiting. I basically can't do any multitasking on a 24 at all. I'd have to throw windows on multiple monitors and then swivel my head around to manage stuff. On a 32" minimum I can multitask even with 4 windows. A spare 2nd 24" monitor next to a 32, just in case, is also very useful. But I find I rarely need to turn it on.

32" would be my choice when 4K is an option. But if you're limited to 1440p in terms of performance or budget, then 27" is the right choice.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.
