Upgrade from an RM650i ? (9900kf/3080ti)

Jay Deah

So... I've currently got a corsair RM650i that i'm very happy with. especially like the USB connection to get stats out of the thing.

Now i got this PSU back when i had an 8700k / 1080ti and now i'm running a 9900k and 3080ti so it's probably time for an upgrade.

whilst it all works fine when stress testing i have had the computer just die on me a few times when gaming so i think that it's not a terrible idea to swap out this PSU. I also seem to have completely LOST the silcon lottery on both these parts so i'm kind of hoping that i do have some sort of power problem and *maybe* i'll be able to overclock either part once the PSU is upgraded (the 9900kf isnt stable at anything over than stock).

question is, what to swap it out with... my initial thought was an RM850i but as far as i can tell these are discontinued/unavailable

Also i'll probably switch up for a 12900k at some point in the next year or two so "future proofing" isnt a terrible idea for me.

Any solid recommendations for a PSU here? dont want to just throw money down the toilet with an AX1600 or similar but also not looking to cheap out.

TIA

oh forgot to mention. i'm using cablemod custom cables so ideally i'd want a PSU compatible with the same cables as the RM650i (which i think are type4)

Nvidia reccomends 750w at the bare minimum. I would get more.

1000w should even be enough for all next gen gpus besides the 4090

If you want to keep the software monitoring and type 4 custom cables then your options are the RMi, HXi, and AX1600i from Corsair. If you can't find a RM850i in stock see if you can find a HXi instead. Might be a little more expensive than the RMi though.

Note: the HXi uses type 3 cables which has a different 24pin cable

They should be aware that the HXi uses type 3, so they would have to get a different 24 pin cable

:)

Ah, right! I forgot the HXi was older than the RMi

They don't use the term "bare minumum".  It says "750W Required".  And they're taking into account that you have a lot going on AND a shit power supply.

To be honest, it'll probably work just fine.

thanks all. went with an RM1000x. was plug and play other than needing to move an under mounted fan a small amount back and plug in all the cables upside down compared to the original

lots of leaked water residue in my RM650i on removal, had a GPU block leak about a year back and it clearly leaked a LOT more than i'd realized!
