Dell XPS 17 9700 - CPU temp jumping from 50 to 90 in seconds

Voy

Hello,

I have Dell XPS 17 9700, even without full load CPU temp is jumping from 50c to 90c in matter of seconds, not sure how is that possible.

Could it be just sensor freaking out?

I use HWinfo to check temps.

What are the specs?

This laptop was made to handle like quad core cpu's at best in 2015 the cooling has barely changed let alone the chassis. This device is very known and prone to overheating.

If you are doing intense work on it this is not the device for you.

It is:

i7-10875H 2.3GHz 8c/16t

RTX2060 Max-Q

I don't really do extensive work or any kind of gaming on it.

I have a lot chrome tabs opened mainly really as it is work laptop.

But temps jump all over the place.

Oh yeah with those specs good luck :p.

It cannot even come remotely close to keeping that cool. Basically all you can do is learn to live with it. Could try undervolting but even then this is way too much computer for such a little laptop.

For a comparison a ge75 from msi which is over double the thickness (and has well over double in cooling) still cannot keep a 10875h in control with it's temps.

If it's new I'd recommend returning it and getting either a more efficient laptop or a appropriately cooled one.

As for performance impact it's about 20-40% worse compared to a correctly cooled 10875h.

A comparative cpu would be a 5800U at 25w. Which basically means it can run full speed in tiny ultrabooks (or devices like the steamdeck)

Ahh yeah I thought that will be the case.

It is a work laptop so can't do much with it.

Just annoying ;).

Thanks for your help.

True.

It is hard to find high performance business laptops.
