Service manual for Yamaha EMX 5 Power Mixer

Chiyawa

Hi,

My friend has this Yamaha EMX 5 Power Mixer (https://my.yamaha.com/en/products/proaudio/mixers/emx7_emx5/), although the main speaker doesn't produce buzzing sound, the REC OUT, STEREO OUT, AUX1 SEND and AUX2 SEND produce buzzing sound when connected to a recording device. I want to check what went wrong with the device but I can't seems to find a service manual for this product, just user manual. Anyone have any idea where can I find this information? I suspect there may be dust in the unit.

Regards,

Chiyawa

The internet is usually your friend for that stuff.  Yamaha is still a going concern, so contacting the company may work.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

That's the thing, I searched and searched, but all of them return the user manual, which I already have. I need to tear the unit down to clean the stuff inside, but not sure what is the proper way of doing so.

A repair manual will have some sort of sku or some similar thing.  Might search for that.  Could be hard to find.

I've found a service manual for the EMX5000 and the EMX512 but nothing for the EMX5,
I doubt you'll be able to find a repair manual for that but the user manual does have some good tips in it as well as a signal path diagram that could be helpful for troubleshooting.
I'm not sure that dust should be causing an issue like this but it is very easy to check, open it up, blow the dust out and see if it's fixed.
While you're in there keep an eye out for anything that looks broken or burnt and you may get a better idea of the issue. Best of luck !!

If the unit sounds fine as a stand-alone device, it's probably just a ground loop with your recording device.

It's certainly not dust. Dust can only produce crackling on potis and faders while moving, not a buzzing sound. That's either the power supply or EMC problems.

I see. Yeah. So far I'm not confident how to open this unit. I'm not sure which screw did I miss because the unit can almost open, but something still hold it from opening.

I did try to plug the equipment to the same power strip, and still the same. I try different equipment, including USB sound card, direct plugging to the computer, the buzzing noise can still be heard. So, I'm not sure what else I can try. I'm not a sound engineer, so I'm not very clear about this. Looks like I need to get a sound engineer to check the system then.

Try a USB sound card, a single cable between the USB sound card and the mixer, and a computer running on battery (a laptop not plugged in).

You want to make sure there is absolutely nothing but the mixer connected to an outlet. And if you have a multimeter you should test if the mixer is grounded correctly.

If the mixer is grounded correctly, nothing else is grounded and it still makes a buzzing sound the mixer is likely defective.

Hmm... Never thought of that, but how should I test this? By probing the ground pin to neutral? But anyway, since I'm not familiar with AC system, I think I'll just leave it for the professional.

Okay, I can try this. By the way, do you know any good quality sound card that I can try? I currently have generic Chinese live karaoke/streaming mixer sound card (in an enclosure with a few volume knob) with Micro USB connection. I actually test the sound card and it works flawlessly in my home setup (plugging my gaming PC and my microphone to another streaming PC) so I don't think there's problem with this sound card.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. I will try these when I visit my friend this weekend.

I would check the mixer case not the ground pin. You want to know if the mixer is grounded not the ground pin.  A grounding fault in the wall socket is only one possible (if surprisingly common) scenario.  One way that happens in old buildings is they try grounding off a radiator or a water pipe, which actually used to be code, but someone 30 years later put in Pex somewhere because asbestos is a bad thing to have around and boom.  the radiator isn’t grounded anymore.

We're in Malaysia and we don't use radiator. But yeah, his place is a 4-storey office building and it could be that the ground actually shares with other offices. But I'm not sure most of it, so I think I have to ask electrician to assist me on this. Now the variables are still too high and I'm trying to narrow down the root cause. My sound card comes with a Bluetooth so maybe I can try that too.

If you’ve got a multimeter ground is easy to check.  I don’t know what electricians cost in Malaysia but in the US it would be $140 for a service call.  Might need one if you’ve got to have a seperate ground for you outlet though.  That can turn into a real mess.

Yeah, I know it could be expensive, but if all of my other options are exhausted, then I have no choice. Fixing grounding actually is a good thing as it offers better protection should there's a fault in electrical system. I have already suggest that to my friend and see if he is willing to get an electrician.
