Router wifi rated speed explanation ?

Nivekover
Go to solution Solved by SignatureSigner,

there are limits to speeds over certain frequency

2.4ghz is around 150

5ghz is around 1300

(This also varies on the protocols used)

If you have 100mbps internet that is the max over any protocol you will get with your router.

Some routers advertise those speeds for longer ranges (thus they cost more) and some routers can handle those speeds with more devices connected.

Hi,

So, I'm about to buy a router, but I don't understand the rated speed. I know, it splits up to the bands in the router, and it is just a theoretical speed, and it won't make my internet faster if my ISP's max is just 100Mbps, but I'm still wondering what those speeds are for then ? Are those actually the maximum speeds that the routers could handle from the sum of the real speed of all the client connected to the wifi, or what ?

I've already researched, but they only tell me what I already know

And does it improve local file sharing over Wifi ?

that is the one area where faster rated speeds on wifi can be useful is over local network sharing.

(EG: wifi 6 has much more bandwidth and could transfer at much faster speeds than wifi 5)
