3090 underperformance becoming concerning.

GlitchedFolx

Hi all,

Hope you're all having a great day.

I was just posting to ask why my 3090 is majorly underperforming. I got the card originally from a friend who used it for mining, and I didn't think that would have as large of a performance drop as it does in games. I'm getting about the same performance from my 3090 that I would from a 1660 that would be overclocked, except with the 3090 being able to handle the 4k resolution. I've DDU'd the system and cleaned the system from any dust or debris, but yet, I'm still not seeing any gains. If someone could point out the issue that would be great.

Thanks

That CPU is one of the culprits. You need something a lot stronger to push that 3090.

Is the card clean? How are the temperatures behaving?

What's your PSU and how many cables do you use to power the card?

I thought that the CPU would be at play, hitting 100% utilization as soon as the game loads, but I didn't think would should have performance issues with games, like black ops 4 for example won't push past 40fps at 1440p.

The card is relatively clean and the temperatures get to a max of 80 degress celcius, but never really going above that.

I had to upgrade the PSU to be able to power this thing, but I'm using a 750w Fully Modular psu from Corsair, specifically the RM750, and I have two 8 pin connectors going to the card.

We need a lot more information than that.

For example: what are the actual performance numbers? What are the clock speeds and utilization of GPU and vram, CPU and ram during the benchmark? How are the Temps?

You say it's like a 1660 but can handle 4k. what does that mean? If you see similar fps on a 1660 in 1080p than on 3090 in 4k then the 3090 is significantly faster.

The R5 3600 shouldn't limit the 3090 to the 1660 performance, but it could limit to the RTX 3060-3070 performance in some cases.

It should be able to push more than 40 fps on 1440p in BO4.

I don't kno what exactly you mean by performance numbers, when idle the GPU clocks at either 200mhz or 1750mhz, or while gaming and video editing its jumping to 1750mhz and just staying there, at 100% utilization at 83 degrees. The ram hits 17gb regularly during gaming and video editing, or while running benchmarks, the cpu reaches an average of 80 degrees and the vram is also hitting a max of 83 degress at 8752mhz

What i mean by the 1660 super and 3090 performance similarity, is that while I'm at 1440p, it performs also identical to a 1660 super that has been overclocked, saying that it can handle 4k is that the 3090 has no issues running a game at 4k whereas the games would just bluntly crash on the 1660

Here's the website of the motherboard.

Flash the latest bios if you have an older version, especially if you're going to upgrade the CPU.

You can also find most the drivers there.

Idle clocks hovering between 200 and 1750MHz is normal behavior. 1750MHz is actually 50MHz above standard 3090 boost clock (which is 1700MHz), so your card actually performs 50MHz faster than "it should" because of GPU boost, though I'd say 1750MHz is low boosting compared to other 3090s I've seen. Also 83C is a bit high IMO but it depends on what sort of cooler your 3090 has. If it's a blowerstyle cooler, the MHz and temps makes a lot of sense. If not, then I'd say the card is choking. Better take a look at airflow and so on.

What case you do you? And with what fan setup? Also, what PSU do you have?

Edit:
The 1700MHz boost clock of the 3090 I'm talking about is Nvidias own official spec. This can of course vary from AIB to AIB.

That card have a boost clock of 1725MHz so actually your card "officially" run 25MHz above promised spec. But a triple fan setup cooler should - IMO - make the card boost higher.

I have a thought though; it may be the memory on the backside that is thermal thottling causing heatspot and making the GPU not boost as high.

If I were you, I'd run a benchmark or play a game for 10/15 minutes and then check memory temps using HWiNFO.

I have a total of 9 case fans, but I don't think the airflow of quiet efficient. I don't have one of the side panels on the system and a 750w psu

If you have a case that can have a decent airflow, holding a side panel open can result with worse temperatures since the air isn't circulating.

Which case do you have? And those 9 fans on the case, is that with the ones on the graphics card (3), psu (1), CPU cooler (1) or without counting those?

Btw, 80C on a R5 3600, that quite warm.

I was checking the memory temps with HWinfo while doing the time spy benchmark. The average temp for them was 77 degrees and it reached a max of 89 degrees. The highest temperature I saw was the Hot Spot, being the max temperature hitting a total of 107 degrees

The case is a deepcool matrexx 55 with three built in case fans at the front, I then added two at the back, front and top, including the aio. I haven't included the GPU or psu fans, but the cpu cooler fans are the ones on the aio i believe.

What would be causing that?

It was this one you checked?

No that isn't the one I used. I used CPUID HWMonitor sorry.

That's okay, no worries. I'd check with HWiNFO, to be sure.

Ok. I'll run time spy with that monitoring and report back,

also, I just wanted to add that my time spy score was 13586

You can't degrade a card that much by wearing it out. 3% or so degradation might be, but what you're describing isn't possible.

Make sure you're supplying the card with enough power. I think it's about 500w card. Use 2 cables.

I am using 2 8pin connectors from my 750w psu
