The term your looking for is itx pc or microatx pc. A good gpu would be the 3060 at msrp, or a 2060 at msrp. For case, I hugely recommend the nr200p, what I consider the best ever itx case. We dont know what motherboard you need since we dont know the cpu.

So here is my stab at this at $950 USD. Warning though this doesn't include a video card because I don't trust online prices not to be well over MSRP.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600G 3.9 GHz 6-Core Processor

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-L9i 33.84 CFM CPU Cooler

MB: ASRock B550M-ITX/ac Mini ITX AM4 Motherboard

RAM: Team T-FORCE DARK Za 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL18 Memory

Main Storage: Seagate EXOS Enterprise 4 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

Boot Drive: Western Digital WD Green SN350 240 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive

Case: Cooler Master MasterBox NR200P Mini ITX Desktop Case

PSU: Corsair SF 750 W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully Modular SFX Power Supply

The processor has integrated graphics on board but I can't say for sure how it would handle Fortnite so there is the matter of finding a GPU that will fit in the case. Once you find that you might be able to shave a few bucks on the PSU by getting something lower wattage. The CPU cooler is a guess on my part on if it will fit well with this case but its Noctua's low profile cooler so I think it will fit.

Something like this?
The GTX 1650 G6 GPU is not great, but it should run Fortnite fine, and she can upgrade it later if she wants to.

I personally wouldn't spend that much money on the HDD, RAM and cooler.

She should be able to install Fortnite and everything else on a ~500GB SSD

32GB of RAM is overkill imo, even if you are using the iGP. You realistically won't use much more than 16GB.

The AMD stock cooler is fine, and there isn't really much need to install an aftermarket for the 5600G.

The RAM is to make sure that even under the weight the usual background tasks (Steam, Windows, Chrome, etc...) that the system stays responsive.

The storage is basic reliability. If the boot drive fails you still have your data, if the data drive fails you can still boot in and try to recover.

The cooler I can see so long as it fits.

I would go for the 5700G, since it's not that much more and has better iGPU. 16GB of RAM should be more than enough for browsing and some gaming.

If you need compact then why not use a small barebones kit like asrock x300? Its sfx form factor (smaller than itx) so its def compact and for being that small its pretty cheap since it includes pretty much half the system (board, case, psu) so you just need the cpu, cooler, ram, and storage

Cpu wise go for a 5700g as it does have a better igpu than the 5600g and its an 8 core

Cooler wise the stock cooler will suffice

Rams wise id suggest some micron/crucial sodimm since you may get good dies that will oc high because igpu relies on the system ram and the faster it is the better, 16gb should suffice

Ssd wise pretty much any decent ssd of your choice, avoid 1tb ssds over 100$ and 2tb ssds over 200$ since thats gen4 territory

I originally took a similar route to yours, however I budgeted down some more options.

Alternatively, if she's going to college it might be more helpful for her to have a gaming laptop? Much more helpful to take notes in class or run software depending on her major.

Consider something like This HP Victus, which is reasonably priced and would get roughly 2X the performance of the Vega APU systems.

Or This Gigabyte which has a 3050Ti and is $800 after a 200$ rebate also has a 144hz screen!

Both of these laptops will perform better than the APU only systems. With the caveat being they won't have much upgrade room. I would only consider building a new PC if she or you plan to get a dedicated gpu at some point in the future.

I would agree that a laptop might be better, because you can get one with a dedicated gpu for around $600-850 even.

The one thing I usually recommend adding right away is more storage though. Gaming laptops are usually super easy to upgrade too.
