Need Some Help Picking Components For a 3070

NeonKitty

Budget (including currency): ~1000€ (excluding GPU+PSU)

Country: Germany

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Work: 3D game dev in Unreal Engine 4/5, 3D modelling/animation/rendering in Blender, music production in FL Studio, work in Photoshop, Quixel Mixer, occasionally After Effects,... Games: Standard AAA single-player fair. Control, Hitman 3, Assassin's Creed games, Cyberpunk 2077,...

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

  • Just bought an EVGA GeForce RTX 3070 XC3 LHR Ultra Black Gaming bundled with an EVGA SuperNOVA GT 750W. Everything else is still missing.
  • I mostly play at 1080p/60, although I may upgrade to 1440/60 in the future and I do have a dual monitor setup for work. Generally speaking, I value graphics quality over sheer number of pixels or super high framerates.
  • I would like a (relatively) quiet rig but without having to go liquid.
  • I'd prefer to have onboard WiFi instead of having to use a WiFi stick.
  • Will probably also end up buying a new ergonomic keyboard and ergonomic mouse (but those are not included in the budget above) so if anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them :). Preferably on the low-mid end of the price spectrum (i.e. under 100 bucks for the keyboard and I have no idea what mice cost tbh).

Here's a preliminary parts list I put together: https://de.pcpartpicker.com/user/NeonKitty/saved/#view=xyTC8d

However, I don't really know my way around hardware so I'm not sure if those components are any good/all gel well together. I'm especially confused regarding all the different specs for RAM, SSDs and motherboards. I've been told that an MSI B550 Gaming Edge WiFi may be a better idea than the GIGABYTE one I currently have on the list (though they're apparently not very different) but also that I might want to consider going with a 12600k over a 5800X. I was pretty deadset on getting a Ryzen CPU but if the 12600K really is the better choice for my use case at this point in time and there's no good reason to go Ryzen, I will go Intel, so any thoughts on that would be appreciated, too :).

Thank you 🙂! So you'd recommend a lower-end CPU even for my productivity use cases?

AAA gaming I would go with more cores. I really doubt AAA studios will make "optimized" games. I think 12700K would be good to handle future AAA games. The 5800X is fine, but I think you can make a similarly priced build with 12700K. Here's what I would go with:

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: Intel Core i7-12700 2.1 GHz 12-Core Processor  (€362.25 @ Amazon Deutschland)
CPU Cooler: Scythe FUMA 2 51.17 CFM CPU Cooler  (€66.89 @ Alternate)
Motherboard: MSI PRO Z690-A WIFI DDR4 ATX LGA1700 Motherboard  (€219.08 @ Amazon Deutschland)

Storage: Crucial P5 2 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive  (€191.98 @ Alternate)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce RTX 3070 8 GB XC3 ULTRA GAMING Video Card
Case: be quiet! Pure Base 500DX ATX Mid Tower Case  (€104.99 @ ARLT)
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA GT 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply
Total: €1064.53

12700K is about 40 euros more. I would go with K in this scenario due to better resale value.

@Jonathan Lee Thank you :)! My dilemma now is that I have one person in here telling me that I should get a lower-end CPU than I had intended and another person telling me that I should get a higher-end CPU than I had intended which is somewhat confusing xD. Regarding your point about AAA games, though: won't those mostly be limited by console specs until the next console generation rolls around?

Yea it's a weird thing with AAA games and PC ports that I noticed lately. It will run nicely on a lower end hardware on consoles, but struggle on PC many of times. Example: Horizon Zero Dawn and Monster Hunter World. If you can afford it, it is worth in my opinion. 12900K is typically not because it only provides extra e cores. Nice for multi tasking, but not so much for game performance. Also remember consoles are now 8 cores just for games. Computers tend to have lots more things running in background than a console.
