Well, both are partially true. It depends on the RAID mode. RAID 0 is where it doubles the size for performance, at the sacrifice for data reliability. RAID 1 is where one piece of data is written to 2 hard drives, in case one hard drive crashes. RAID 5 is like RAID 1, but it uses 3 or more drives.

That's all fair and well, but what I did on my old PC was something where instead of having 2 250gb HDDs it would appear as 1 500GB HDD, but I'm unsure if it had any impact on speeds/reliability etc or if it is something other than RAID?

It may be a bit faster because in RAID 0, one set of data is split and is sent to two hard drives. When it is called for, it gets sent back, and it takes less time to search for the data, I think.

It has to be tiring to have people find, copy, and paste those links all the time. I really advise people to use Google or YouTube more often instead of turning this place into Yahoo Answers for the easy questions... :P

It's hard to work out what it was I was doing when I don't know what it is called, I'm just trying to find out if it falls under the "RAID" banner....

It wasn't hard at all. I just searched "what is raid tech quickie" and Linus' video's were the first results.

... Except it still hasn't been cleared up for me, I'm uncertain about the following:

It was just something I did in the settings but I can't remember what, it was years ago now.
