Intel Xeon E3-1230V3 OR AMD FX-8350

Hi I am stuck I see AMD FX-8350 is at a killer deal at £118.95 but the Intel Xeon E3-1230V3 is £148.70.

I am more tempted with the amd but I need to know will amd out preform Xeon?

Xeon.

People say Xeon are bad for gaming when it's pretty much on par with an i5 or i7

The 1230v3 is a sligthy underclocked i7 4770 without and iGPU

Not necessarily. It's a Haswell with four cores, hyperthreading enabled, and basically no less functionality than a locked i7 for the price of an i5.

The Xeon will kill the 8350 for everything. But you can't oc it. So if you want to oc then you can't go Xeon. If you don't want to oc anyways Xeon all the way.

I went with the 1240v3 it's a really nice chip. I installed ESX on it and use it for work purposes, never actually gamed with it.

You can actually OC it, it's just a bit more complicated as overclocking a chip with open multiplicator. You have to fiddle around with the base clock, but I saw running E3-1230v3 @ 3,9 GHz, which puts them way ahead even of a average overclocked 8350.

Yeah but that isn't what i call any serious overclocking.

It's not serious overclocking but it actually makes quite a difference in daily life. You're also located in Germany so I hope you're able to read this article, where a Stock Xeon and an overclocked (only to 3,7 GHz are benchmarked). While the small amount of data isn't conclusive a trend is clearly visible: http://www.pcgameshardware.de/CPU-Hardware-154106/Tests/Xeon-E3-1230-v3-Test-1099616/

Xeon all the way. I'm planning to use Xeons in my future builds, since I'm not much of an overclocker.

Yeah I'm german so that isn't a problem. I don't think 8% (3.7/3.4 = 1.08) is a thing. Also in games it's 2 % :P Yeah so it's kinda pointless as the Xeon is already a powerhouse.

You could argue if the 5% bonus you get if you overclock a 4770k to 4,5 GHz are worth it, too :D. But I agree, it's kind of stupid to overclock a Xeon except you like to tinker around.

It depends on what you are doing; Gaming or Video Editing? If your a gamer, the FX is your best choice, if its video editing, the FX is fine as long as it has great hardware to back it up, but the Xeon is a workstation processor, so you don't have give it great hardware.

I was told on overclock3d that this cpu the Xeon will work fine in games as well and I show alot of YouTube video of people playing games with this cpu so it is possible and can handle games.

No real decision maker for me, the Xeon has IPC at a fixed clock, the FX has OC headroom (my type of fun) i would choose FX in this rare case.

Xeon for editing, 3D, or a shit-ton of streaming and heavy gaming, AMD for everything else, for the most part.

Get the Xeon. Basically a 4770 without iGPU. ECC may or not be a relevant for you.
