question about static discharge and monitors

hello, quick question. i had built up a good amount of static, and went to turn my monitor off, and i gave it a decent shock. the screen shut off on it's own for about 5 seconds, and came back on. the screen works just fine, no issues, but it made me wonder if static shock can break the monitor? if so, anything i can do to avoid it, maybe better grounding? just curious, thanks for the input.
