Just fried an SSD?

ripper101

So I just plugged in my SSD because it wasn't showing up when I booted into Windows. So I shut it down and the connector looked loose so I tightened it and booted it up. When I pressed the power button I heard a pop and a burning smell filled my room. I unplugged my PC and looked for the culprit. I couldn't find anything for a while but when I started smelling around I noticed the SSD I just plugged in smelled burnt.

I really only had games on it but I am not sure what is to blame. I did switch out my power supply today with a new one BUT I used the old SATA cord from my last modular power supply because I liked the way It looked versus the new SATA cable. It snapped in nicely and was the same size so I was confident it wouldn't be an issue. I ALSO had another SSD on the same SATA cord that did not get fried.

I am mainly trying to find out what is to blame. I really wanna say the power supply is fine because I have the remaining SSD plugged into the same SATA port right now and It is working fine. The remaining SSD did not get fried so I am leaning towards the cord I used OR if the SSD decided to randomly fry itself

Unless they were from the same manufacturer, there's your problem.

It's possible the other SSD isn't using one of the power rails, so it's not shorting out the same way, or it's just better protected.

A Western Digital Blue was the one that burnt up on me. The other one was a Samsung 850 so ig it would make sense the samsung has better protection

it always sucks to learn a lesson the hard way(my usual way of learning), but at least you didn't lose any important data.

Can you take a picture of the SATA Power / Data cables that were plugged in when both SSD's burned up?

That SSD is gone, no saving that.

This is almost certainly the problem. Which power supply did you have, and what did you switch to? I'd bet their pinouts are different despite using the same connector. Modular power supply connectors aren't standardized like motherboard or GPU connectors.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It was a Corsair to an EVGA

Nothing to see from it. The female connectors on the PSU are fine and the cable itself looks brand new even inside male connectors

Yep, that did it. Corsair and EVGA use different pinouts. Switching the cable sent 12V to the 5V wire, 5V to the 3.3V wire, 3.3V to the 12V wire, and left one ground wire disconnected.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
