I watch this Notebook from Framework and wonder how many Posters on this Forum own one.

Really nice and I'm glade those kind of Laptops exist. Good Luck to the Company and Linus as an Investor. I'm Low Income so I have to buy Refurbished Thinkpads online instead. So far how usable is He finding it? Would I get one if I could and use it? Well yes of course.

The idea definitely seems great.

A positive step in the right direction regarding laptop customization and repairability.

I especially like the simplicity of the port design and how you can specify which adapters you want based on your needs.

Very clever.

I mean, it's a good idea, but it's not really for me yet. The IO is more limited than I'd like (I'm very IO heavy on my devices and hate dongles, I have used every single port on this laptop at the same time), and my Thinkpad L13 Yoga is still very repairable. It's not as good as a framework, but I can replace the keyboard in under 5 minutes if the tools are laid out for me, replace the battery in about the same amount of time, and do all the other minor repairs you're likely to have to do on a laptop pretty easily. The only things I wish were easier are the screen and the RAM. The screen can't really be done much better since it is a 2 in 1, and the RAM is unfortunately soldered.

After a few generations (and hopefully adding the track point from a Thinkpad, either 1st party or aftermarket with a different keyboard), it's likely to be on my shortlist for my next machine, but as of now a) I don't need it, and b) it wouldn't work for my use case anyway. Once they add more IO and maybe a touch screen, it will work for me, but as of now it's just not there yet. That said, if used Thinkpads stay the prices they are on the used market, I'd still probably go for one of those.

I insist on Standard SO-DIMMs for RAM along with removable Storage on Notebooks. Oh I also require an actual Ethernet Port as well.

I'm usually the same, I just got this machine for $300 US, so I was a bit more willing to forgive. At least the storage is still removable.

I have a Refurbished Thinkpad T430 I gotten from Newegg for $160 including S/H. Not bad at all, looks barely used.

  • 3 weeks later...

I just ordered one. I have never spent my own money on a PC.

I bought my first Mac in 1991. I love my Apple ecosystem. I've had only one Apple product fail in over 30 years. I'm sitting here today trying to figure out what to do with my 2013 MBP and the 2011(?) MBA I gave my to my husband. They both still work. I was just using the MBP for my software engineering work a couple of months ago.

But right to repair is important and this really does look like a company worth supporting.

I haven't even had a PC for work since about 2007. I do remember nightmares of popups and just general gnashing of teeth.

I'm not the demographic for anything. I prefer "aging punk" to "boomer," but they are both accurate. My born-in-1929 mom was a programmer back when it was low paid women's work.

From what I gather Linus implied on the last WAN show that it wasn't everything he hoped it would be. I didn't get catch any more more details though.🤷‍♂️

I'm seriously considering purchasing one soon and would love to hear any feedback or see another review.

I caught that, too.

For me, it won't be a daily driver. My last Windows experience was when it was a hellscape of popup errors that you couldn't fix without a fresh install every few months. I remember "For dog's sake, don't install any SOFTWARE on it," because the problem was usually some program you actually installed to do work. So my expectations are very low.

It’s completely pointless and really bad environmentally.

In what way? No ThunderBolt? Few Folks need or benefit from it. Lack of 4k doesn't matter with Notebook screen sizes as it is pointless.

The biggest issue with laptops and aging are the internal components that are soldered BGA parts which aren’t replaceable. Filling a landfill with swappable components that people haven’t bought is far worse than say a MacBook that requires maybe one dongle and is made of nearly 100% recycled and recyclable materials once it comes to the end of its life.

The entire approach accomplishes the opposite of the goal.

How much are you willing to pay a Laptop with completely replaceable componates? While disliking E-Waste as much as you do, but being low income Notebooks tend to "walk off" so my needs require something at low cost.

Framework isn’t low cost? The base model costs the same as a MBA while having worse specs and the top model costs MORE than a base 14” MBP which is a much more capable machine that will last longer and has a lower impact on the environment.

You can’t have a laptop with replaceable components unless you’re willing to carry around a brick. You can maybe replace the main board in the framework if they survive, it ever comes off of “coming soon” and at a hefty price, like over a grand for a $420 CPU. That’s a solid 2x markup.

I'm going to have to look at  the Site again. But prefer Notebooks that are made with durable materials, not to meantean dent specs.
