My question relates to a new build i am thinking of.  Just for a new media pc.  Was looking at the 15-12400f and a 2080.  Again not gaming at all, but just want to future proof the rig.  Got a few samsung 980 pro's at a great price.  But again, this is not a gaming rig.  Mostly used for financial research.  I want absolute stability.  Is ECC ram worth looking at is this use case?  Money is not a issue.  Is a e5 xeon worth looking at?  I am thinking the 2080 is a little overkill for a media pc, but i cringe at using the iGPU.

Thought or suggestions?

Thanks

For a media server I woudln't bother with ecc. It really won't matter for playing back media.

Also the xeon e5s are pretty old now, if you want a reasonble desktop with ecc, I'd go with ryzen as most of those chips support ecc

Also for a media PC, Id skip the 2080 and get the non f version as the intel igpu has better video decoding than any dgpu out today.

The iGPU is better for playback than the 2080?  Doesn't sound right, but to be honest i don't know.  Even for 4k playback?  i would prefer to run all my displays at 120Hrz.  My monitors support higher, and that's why i was thinking the 2080.  Does the iGPU support over 60Hrz at 4k? (sorry, i have not researched enough)

Personal Opinion:

I won't use anything other than Xeons and ECC RAM.

I am a photographer.

Does it make a difference in my work? Not one bit. But it's piece of mind.

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

The igpu has better decoding abilities, as it can decode many formats like av1, h.265 422 10 bit and others than the 2080 can't decode.

Yea the igpu supports 60hz at 4k, and can do 120hz too(not sure about 4k, probably need a supported board)

But for media playback, the amount of gpu power doesn't really matter, you just want good hardware decoding, and the intel igpus are the best now.

If you need absolute stability / reliability ECC is the only way to go. igpu is absolutely fine if you dont game or use any gpu accellerated programs. Any modern igpu will have onboard hardware video decoding that will play current video standards  and run 4k 60hz displays without effort.
