I would personally look for an H270 or H170, but would settle for B250 or B150 if I had to depending on my connectivity needs. That's what I did a while back when I needed a board for an i7 6700 (see "Harmonic" in my signature). I was lucky to find a new board for pretty cheap on Amazon, but if I hadn't, I would have looked on ebay for a used board from a reputable seller. H110 is really a pretty bad choice. It has only PCIe 2.0, and very limited PCIe lanes as well as other limitations since that chipset is used mostly for small form factor or very cheap builds. "BlackBox" in my sig uses an H110 board. It works well for a tiny iGPU system, but it would not be good for a desktop.

TL;DR: old machine, z170 board with i5 6600k, motherboard dead, need new but can't find z170, found h110, other than no overclock do I lose anything

Had a computer, daily driven since 2016, i5 6600k, Z170XP-SLI motherboard, GTX 1060 6G, 16 gigs 2400Mhz ram, and Corsair CS650M PSU. I don't do competitive gaming and I just run a 1080p 75hz display so, I'm happy with it and don't really feel the need for an upgrade yet.

5 days ago pressed the power button, and nothing. It won't turn on, at all, completely dead. Did the paperclip test, PSU passed, then to confirm, I connected the PSU on brother's machine, worked completely fine, so conclusion is dead motherboard. Unfortunately Z170 hasn't been in production for a few years, and my only lead is a boxed H110 motherboard for 60$.

If I'm unable to find a z170 board, am I losing out on anything by getting the h110? And is there any compatibility issues to worry about?

I know I won't be able to overclock, but to be honest I'm not missing out on much, I didn't overclock before anyways because it got unstable (random freezes and shutdowns) and I didn't notice much of a difference. (Looking back I'd have been completely fine not buying z170 and a K series but hey, live and learn.)

I'd list the specific h110 model but the store didn't mention, I asked via a phone call not online

I'll still look around for the z170 but I've come up short and I wouldn't really rely on used ones.

Yes. H110 has significantly reduced connectivity vs Z170. So fewer USB ports, SATA ports, PCIe lanes, DIMMs per channel... That kind of thing

Have you looked around for Z270, H270, B250, H170, B150? Any of those are compatible and would be better options vs H110.

I have not, I'll try that, I didn't think 7th Gen Intel was backwards compatible

I'll definitely look into it, thanks, but considering the current market situation I might get charged full price so in that case what would be the least compromise option?

I have 3 drives but they're all SATA connected and, 5 occupied USB ports but they're peripherals (KB, Mouse, Printer, WiFi, Graphics Tablet) so I don't really need the transfer speeds, except the once a month phone files transfer

Alright I'll prioritize H170 and H270, or at least, something that's not H110. It sounds like it's the absolute worst choice and should be kept as an absolute last case scenario

Thank you so much for your help!
