Is it normal for BT headphone to have squeal/whine?

Tech Reprise

Hello,

I recently bought a new pair of headphones from JBL to use with my new phone which doesn't come with a headphone jack.

But when I turn on/pause a song/play videos there is a faint hum/whine in the left side which goes away after 10secs approx and comes back whenever something with a media is played.

This is the second unit of the headphone, I also have the same headphone in a different colour from Feb 2021 which also exhibits the issue but the hum is much quieter on the old one.

So is that normal occurence in budget headphones?

In my experience yes. All the budget earphones I’ve tried have had some amount of background hum/static, some have been better than others but all had it.

I’ve never heard that with Bluetooth headphones and I’ve had plenty of them. Bose QC 35 II, Sony XM4 over ears, XM4 buds and AirPods Pro all have been completely silent unless something is being played.

I just ordered a Replacement from Amazon.

Its just that the whine is pretty noticeable bugs me out. Must be a defective bluetooth module inside the headphones.

I've used Senns HD 4.40 in the past, and currently daily driving their Momentum 3s and I also hear a "hum" in the background when they're on and nothing is playing.

It does seem to be a BT background noise thingy but it doesn't bother me - the moment something plays it disappears (even with super-low volume) and, if nothing plays, it also disappears after a short time (I assume the headset goes into a semi-sleep state).

Mine is entirely opposite when it doesnt play its silent, the moment it plays something it hums and when audio stops its humming stops after 10 secs

Bluetooth doesn't inherently introduce noise/background static. I'd more suspect bad implementation of the amplifier circuitry, but that's speculation.

There are headphones on the market with audibly transparent bluetooth implementations... Shure comes to mind as particularly good sounding, though a bit lagging in feature set.

Guys I had ordered a replacement and it also had the same issue in the opposite side 🤣 Looks like really bad build and cost cutting by JBL.
