external drive for boot drive?

You can but watch the speeds, it may not be faster than a SATA HDD if it's a slow drive. And ofc the unplugging issue.

Thoughout the title is little bit stupid, but anyways, can't think off a good title...

If you have ever readed my profile, you can see I listed a "HP Elitebook 8460p" as "currenty find part to repair". And yep, I'm talking about that now.

That laptop have a broken SATA port (sadly) but the drive is still usable and Windows did not get corrupted. I'm thinking of using NVMe SSD instead.

After looking inside my laptop, I found 2x M2 port, one get occupired by the WLAN card.

It's like this:

image.png.24762a803e67936e9f9e98b65d930a90.png

About the SSD I want to upgrade, I asked my friends, also a tech tips provider, says that I need to use this SSD:

HP Elitebook 8460P SSD upgrade M.2 PCIE NVME - HP Support Community - 6684314

And oh bois that's insanely EXPENSIVE IN VIETNAM. Just 52GB (only 50 usable) cost me nearly 60USD! I want a 128GB one and it can goes up to more than 100USD!

(Note: I make the text large to make the text do not look to small compare to the image. Image can't be adjusted in this forum as you know)

What I should do? Fixing the SATA port is more expensive than buying a Seagate Baracudda 12TB. Can anyone suggest anything other? Thanks!

That's an mSATA SSD, I dont think you need to match the model just the connection bus.

The one you have in the picture is 50.8mm long (2 inches), not sure if there's a length limit for your device

Actually all mSATA drives I've seen have exactly the same length, so it doesnt matter

I am a totally noob in mSATA. To be honest, I never know, or even touch a mSATA SSD before. I just just know it today...

Oh so mSATA also expensive outside Vietnam? So I'm not get scammed ;)) But too much for an old laptop that running i5 2520M and getting literally 180 points in CineBench R20.

Is there another option? I don't want to spend much money...

None, mSATA ports arent compatible with anything else

Also, can anyone explain for me why mSATA is so expensive?

Because it's rarely used these days, M.2 took over. It started in Intel 4th gen's days called NGFF. Low demand = High unit pricing.

Ok, I will accept my fate.

Should I use USB/Firewire external drive for boot drive? I'm fear of someone unplug my drive when it's running...

Thanks! I don't matter the speed anyways, so I will use a USB HDD. I wonder how long the laptop need to boot ;))

About unplugging issue, I'm thinking of solder the drive to the USB port on the laptop. Might bit stupid tho...
