Coil whine again

Go to solution Solved by RAS_3885,

Nothing in that video jumped out to me as coil whine. I MIGHT have heard the crackling but had to crank the volume way up.

Have you tried a different physical power outlet that's on a different circuit? Given you state the issue happens on different GPUs and different PSUs it either a different component or something else.

I'm trying to get rid of a really annoying coil whine problem that I've been having for ages.

I previously had a GTX 1070 that had coil whine. I replaced it with a 6600 XT and I have the same problem.

I've also tried a Corsair RMx 650 and a SeaSonic GX 750 with no luck. I still have coil whine and I don't know whats causing it.

It also happens at low power draw at 35W such as on Dota 2. Video clip of the noise at 60 FPS (it sounds like crackling): https://imgur.com/a/90fFUUq

What do you make of it?

I don’t hear anything but some fans, but that just may be my ears being old.  Coil whine is notoriously difficult to impossible to get rid of.  Sometimes very small overclocks can do it in that it can change the frequency to something you can’t hear.  There’s a bunch of stuff that doesn’t work or works so rarely it’s considered an old wives tale. The small overclock thing is perilously close to that level as it is.  Nothing I know of is reliable.  Sell the thing to an older person who can’t hear the whine may be one option.

I've tried multiple outlets, upstairs downstairs. I've gone through 3 different motherboards. I don't know whats causing it, its incredibly annoying.

Are you sure it's not a case fan making the noise?

Yes. Its not the case fan, the crackling instantly goes away after quitting the game. Strangely enough, If I load up a more demanding game like Red Dead Redemption 2, the whine turns from crackling to a high pitched sound. Its less noticeable on more demanding games as the frequency is higher.

This might want some stethoscoping to make sure where the problem is actually coming from.  There are coils on lots of things including the PSU, GPU, and Motherboard.  They look like little wire wrapped doughnuts usually.

Based on that I agree it's likely coil whine. It's odd that you've swapped so many components and still have the issue, however, coil whine can be a pain.

Unfortunately the place I bought i from has no stock, so I can't RMA yet for a replacement. It sucks. I've heard people running stress tests and gaming on it for a month and it went away eventually.

mine never goes away, it just varies from not noticable,  usually at 60fps to just kill me right now at everything above 600fps... thankfully, or unfortunately,  i really dont like playing at anything above 60fps (or under) so i can't really try the "month long torture method" as it would be unbearable.

However i could just switch to my other power supply, funny enough there's no coilwhine at all with that one, at least not under ~400fps or something.

but, that means redoing my whole pc and it's only a 500w so i don't really know if its a good idea long term (system actually uses up to 498w semi regularly,  according to my corsair rmi)

You don’t RMA from retailers.  That’s a return. The retailer would the. RMA it.  RMA is a manufacturer thing and often involves mailing it to whatever country it was made in

The Sapphire warranty terms state the place of purchase is responsible for a return/replacement though.

That’s wacky.  That could be an attempt to weasel out of manufacturer warranty, or it could just be a convenience.  On the bright side it’s a minor problem and doesn’t affect functionality in an major way. Is the device still produced?  Do they have an order out for it? I had an issue once where I pre-ordered a car and someone sold my pre-ordered car to someone else because then they thought they could sell two cars.  I just never dealt with the dealership again. Might do to make sure that you’ve got documentation your problem started within the warranty period, and that they have stock on order and aren’t just selling your replacement card as soon as they get it in.

Its from Overclockers UK, one of the largest PC system integrators in UK. I believe the card has a 3 year warranty, so I've plenty of time to claim warranty. I need the card as I won't have a working PC without so I can't do without unless I am guaranteed a replacement first.
