R9 270 or GTX 660

Hello guys!

I'm thinking about an upgrade from my HD 5570 1Gb GPU. I usually game on my Samsung SyncMaster 22" monitor on 1680x1050, sometimes on a an LG TV on 1920x1080. Question is which card should I choose? They're priced pretty similarly, but R9 270 seems to be more powerfull.

My games:

Civ 5

CS:GO

Rust

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Sleeping Dogs

BF3

Hitman Absolution

Max Paynes

Also looking forward for some Bioshock(s)

I would like to hear your opinions and get suggestions, cheers!

My specs:

  • CPU
    i5 - 4570S 2.9 GHz

You could get a 760 if you can stretch your budget to $250.

The r9 270 will be faster for the most part, and if you overclock it it can be EVEN FASTER.

However, there are two thing you need to think about.

Mantle or G-sync?  Gsync=Nvidia Mantle=AMD

Gsync:

Gsync is a new technology designed to stop screen tearing which is a module put in gaming monitors to sync the refresh rate of your monitor with your computer, however you will need to buy a gsync monitor for this to work.

Mantle:

Mantle is all about the frames, Mantle allows devs to have hardware level access to your computer and essentially elimate allot of bottleknecking.  This means if your CPU isn't super fast you can get a good ammount of extra fps using Mantle.  Mantle is free for all AMD r9, r7 graphics cards and is already supported by the latest big titles, like Battlefield 4, Theif.  etc.

Yeah... I don't really care for G-Sync as I'm not that hardcore and Mantle pretty cool, but isn't a deal breaker for me.

GTX 760 costs around 300$ and both R9 and 660 are around 215$, so no...

P.S. this was really fast :D This community is awesome!

the 270 is a fair bit faster than the 660 i've had both. the 270 is actually nearer to my 670 than the 660, but only slightly

Gsync will make a much larger difference than mantle will. But will require a new monitor.

But yeh the 270 is quite a bit faster although the new drivers from nVidia do close the gap a bit .

I would have to say the R9 270 is the better performer. But the GTX 660 can be got now for under $200. I wish now I would have waited and got the 660 instead of my 650 Ti. The 660 should be more than enough power to run any game you want at 1080. I know some people claim it's 192 bit bus hurts the 2GB V-ram, But it does not. It has a memory Bandwidth of 144.2 GB/sec that actually should be enough speed to run 3GB of V-ram. The ATI 7870 has a 256bit bus, and it's memory Bandwidth is 153.6 GB/sec, So that's not much difference in bandwith speed. But If your budget is real low, You could go with the AMD R7 260x 2GB. It is a very nice performing GPU for only $129. (I have actually thought about getting one) It is in the same performance bracket as the 650Ti and 750Ti and 7790, It has a little more power than the 650Ti and 7790 but has a little less power than the 750Ti, Like my 650Ti you will have to lower Anti-Alaising on some games. But every game will be playable. But that is a sacrafice some gamers have to make when low on cash.

270 is faster with good overclocking ability and have bigger memory bus for better 1080p experience.
