Becoming a moderator

I was wondering if any mods could share how they became mods, and how someone could go about becoming a mod?

People that aren't scummy like a decent amount of us on here (isn't always a bad thing <3) get moderator. I don't see why you would want to be one though.

In nearly every forum and message board I've been to over the years, asking to become a mod is almost a guarantee you'll never become one.

 

Mods tend to be chosen by either being a well respected member of the community or by filling out an application if the site has them.

There's a general rule of thumb that I follow, and that is thus: Those who make it known that they want to be a moderator likely don't deserve it in the first place. Not that you shouldn't hate having the job, but that pretending to meet the criteria of a candidate is really no better than being a complete asshole.

 

And by the way, I don't understand this idolization of forum moderators. They enforce rules. On an internet message board. Ever stop to think maybe it's a little unhealthy to assume they're always some sort of mythological heroes?
